Looks like stadium is packed. Wondering how many in attendance. Anyone have a count?

I thought one of the announcers said something about 52k.

The announcers mentioned the attendance, but I forgot what it was. They did say that the upper deck was closed, so it was not at the total capacity that the stadium could hold.

Still, I think that's a great turnout, no?

Anyone have a guess at how this compares to other stops on the DL?

IAAF report (link in T&FN home page headline section) said it was a capacity crowd of more than 52,000.

Good PR but I don't think that's correct. The capacity is 52k but it was slightly short.

Still massive turn out.

London will be around 80k I think and a definite sell out both days.

Paris attendance is great every year but stadium has a capacity of around 80,000. Selling 52,000 tickets doesn't mean it was a capacity crowd. Paris Worlds 2003 had huge attendance!

Same will be in Moscow for the World Champs  Almost half the seats will be covered with banners just to say they sold all the tickets (if they sell). PUKING Please just leave the seats empty don't try to sell pathetic stories.
But meetings in Russia usually have no spectators and will be hard to fill even half of the seats. Kindergarten during morning sessions is to be expected. Russian people just don't go to watch athletics, hopefully will be different at WC!

Zurich Euro 2014 will show them :D

It has a potantial capacity of 80,000. The top section wasn't open yesterday so the actual capacity available was only 52,000.

Can't wait.

I'm actually more excited for this than I am Moscow.

Empty seats create a terrible appearance on tv. If the covering of the seating areas is done well, you hardly notice that it's there. IIRC, they did the same thing in for some of the stadium in Daegu.

Hard to understand how a stadium in a major city could NOT be filled. One can always price the seats so as to guarantee a sellout crowd.. Are these teenagers in the Paris stadium really paying to be there ?

as i understand, Paris does a supreme job of filling seats with the younger set (no idea how much of a giveaway the tickets may be).

It can be easy. Remember the meet in Athens?
