Okagbare - should she do four events in Moscow?

Postby deroki » Fri Jul 05, 2013 1:51 pm

Given the schedule:

10th Aug, 19:20 LJ qualifying
11th Aug, 11:55 100m heats
19:00 LJ final
12th Aug, 19:35 100m semi-final
21:50 100m final
15th Aug, 10:55 200m heats
19:45 200m semi-final
16th Aug, 21:15 200m final
18th Aug, 16:15 4x100m heats
18:10 4x100m final

should Okagbare compete in all 4 events at Worlds? What will John Smith decide? If BO and JS have to choose one event to drop, which should it be?

She should .....I think she could well medal in all of them as well ...maybe not the relay

I think she should do all four events...I think the one they are most likely to drop is the 200m but the good thing is that it doesn't really interfere with either the 100m or LJ, so they could do that one depending on how she feels.

I agree that she can medal in all three individual events, with her 200m prospects being the weakest.

Is she trying to be like Marion jones now ? I think she has looked more consistent in the 100.

Keep long jump, relay, and one individual sprint.

Her best chance is probably the LJ if she chooses to focus on the event. I do believe that she should do all four though. Her best 2 events are the first two events and everything else would just be extra.

I like his ideas that the country shouldnt place all hope in BO and needs to start developing its athletes. Since 2004, they have gotten 4 bronze medals. 3 in relays 1 from Okagbare in the Beijing long jump. Everything else since then....nothing.

She could very well do it, but that would be too taxing. I would suggest the long jump and the 100m for now where she has a better shot at the podium.

While his main point is valid his use of BO as an example is way off base. Running her legs off on the circuit? It simply amazes me how administrators think they know better than the coaches. It is not unusual, and symptomatic of European track and other parts of the world. Funny how they watch Jamaicans and Americans "run their legs off" on the circuit and beat them down at majors but criticize their own for doing the same.

I do not know if she will do all 4 events, but I would vote for it with 3 days rest.

Yes.She should do her individuals, and then have fun in the relay. The "administration"(government) issue is another subject.
Because of the government not handling their athletes professionally, and with dignity for
decades, causing the once great and near dominating track & field program athletes to
run for other countries far and near depleting the country of their factory like talent base.Yes another subject. :|

It is a real shame. But is a reflection of Nigerian government as a whole. Thankfully I don't think there is any risk of her changing nationality like Obikwelu did because she is based in US and getting all the support she need. And would be lunacy switching to US citizenship given how tough it is to qualify from their trials.

Surely her doing the 200 is a no brainer in terms of her individual events? I mean, ok, if she wins gold in the LJ or 100 she may well decide to have a rest, but surely the 200, finishing after her 2 "main" events, is not going to do her any harm at all...

I'd advise her to go ahead and do all of them. She looks to be a fav in the 100m and LJ .Surely running the 200m after doing her 2 supposedly pet events is as peach said a no brainer. I think she can also medal in the 200m. She looks to be in good shape and good luck to her

Surprisingly this is actually doable.

I'm not saying she should but she definitely could.

She's becoming one of my faves

She makes everyone else look like a midget but she's apparently only 5'11

How much would doing the quadruple hurt her chances in her two main events (the 100m and the LJ)? Her start in the 100m needs some serious work if she intends to go for gold if you ask me but she is also lacking consistency in the LJ and likely needs more work on that as well. In the 100 there is SAFP and in the LJ there is Reese. Which would seem a more likely goal if she focuses on it?

Because of her size, I'll bet that if she we an American, the bobsled coaches would be drooling over her.

She is quietly growing on me as well. Come Moscow I expect her to be leaving with 3 medals .

In a Championship? I like her chances better against SAFP than Reese.
