Between Bondarenko, Barshim (and Ukhov?), all of a sudden the men's high jump has quite literally leapt to another level.

Bondarenko's going for broke now, his first attempt at 2.46 didn't look too bad...

Bondarenko jumps to #3 at the all time list with Igor Paklin (Paklin did it in 1985).

This is the best the men's HJ has been in a long long time. Four people over 2.37 this year and two of them over 2.40 !

That 2.41 jump was ridiculous .....he has some space between himself and the bar.....me thinks he will probably get closer to the record or break it.

I didn't see his first attempt at 2.46m, but based on the quality of his 2nd attempt, I thought the announcers made a mistake when they said 2.46 - I figured he was trying for 2.36.

His 2.41m looked very, very good.

Agreed - probably would have cleared 2.43. And Kynard looked good at his 2.37 clearance. He'll go higher.

I almost forgot about Kynard, he set a new PB of 2.37m. In light of Bondarenko this seems more casual than the feat deserves.

Barshim has a back injury and they are being cautious ahead of Moscow.

And not off of a bouncing floor. Whats more, it sounds like he might have made 2.42 or 2.43 if either his lower or last height was set there.

His first attempt @ the WR was the much better than the other two - he easily had the height, just came down on it slightly. Amazing to watch.

Great stuff! How close was Bondarenko at 2.46? I was unable to watch. Charles Austin tried it in Atlanta in '96. 2.30 for Jonas. he is clearly #2 in the US.

But again I question Kynard's passing. He sets a PB at 2.37, then misses his first attempt at 2.39, then passes and has only two tries at 2.41. Why play this game all the time? He could have passed at 2.35 if the object was to save himself.

But sometimes he should go for heights instead of constantly playing this passing game of diminishing returns. Bondarenko cleared 2.41 in his third but Kynard had already limited himself to just two attempts. 2.39 would not have been a shabby result either.

Bondarenko does nothing exceptional in his bar clearance but he is extremely quick into his take-off. He does not bring his arms back like many jumpers do. In that respect he is Holm like with no loss of speed.

He flew over 2.41m. His arc and trajectory was reminiscent of Sjoberg's 2.42m. It just did not look like he was going to ever come down. The confidence he gets from tying the great Igor Paklin's mark and the competition from hopefully a healthy Barshim could push them both to 2.43+. Interesting to note that he cleared an ancillary 2.39m.

His first two were clearable. Speaking of Austin, his best jumps ever were all three of his 2.45 attempts in Zurich, 91. Hips had daylight under him and clipped with his calves each time. A few centimeters difference in foot placement and he would have beaten Javier to 2.45m.

Wow, talk about setting the bar high  Bondarenko is only the 4th man ever to jump that high outdoors, and the first since 1994 :!:

Yeah, I have high standards. If you look at the 2.40 jumpers and take out the ones who have cleared 2.41 or higher, only 1 out of 5 have held the WR. Then you have Soto....speechless.

To Erik, the difference between losing with 2.37 and 2.39 is about the difference between being punched in the nose or the eye. He equally detests both. Winning is is motivation, all else is secondary. I'm not saying I agree with it but I'm telling you how he is and where his motivation for improvement comes from.

And what is Austin's AR, hitting that mark or beating it is probably worth it. Any comp he wins he can go for 2.39; he was jumping well and striking while the iron is hot was definitely the plan for the day.

Here is my point: Kynard obviously felt great. But Bondarenko made 2.39 in his first and Kynard did not. So a super confident Kynard should, for once, be patient and focus on clearing 2.39 and get 3 THREE attempts at 2.41. It makes a huge difference, especially on those heights.
Notice that Bondarenko made 2.41 in HIS third!

Another thing is that Kynard has not exactly had overwhelming success in big meets with his passing tactics.

Note though that after initially failing at 2.35 in Lausanne (can someone please fix the thread title name) he passed to 2.37 and cleared so his passing game worked to an extent on Thursday.

I just noticed than Bondarenko opened (successfully) at 7-4¼ (2.24). That's a pretty bold statement in and of itself.

The highest entrance height I ever saw and maybe the highest in history was Dalton Grant in '93 at Stuttgart in the WC when he entered the competition at 2.31, if my memory is correct. Never jumped higher than 2.37 which was indoors.

i have a vague recollection of somebody subsequently matching Grant's Tokyo opening (and being successful), but it's escaping me at the moment if it's true.

Then there's Thranhardt and Sjoberg starting at 2.32 in an indoor meet (and both failing!)
