The spectre of SRR hangs over this event. She'll need to be in 50.5 form or better to make WC and it's possible she won't make final. But no one knows until that first gun's fired. If she's not at her best the top-3 looks set. No DeeDee, no Diamond, no Phyllis Francis and maybe a weakened SRR means a lesser final. Is anyone else ready to step up?

Well SRR winning her heat and getting the A standard is a good way to start.

SRR run an easy 51.4. Maybe she is ready to be top 3. Will know very soon.

Impressive for SRR in comparison to earlier race. Next question is how much she'll have left for the next two rounds.

Anyone know why SRR has started leaning 5 meters before the line? Seems she started doing this last year...

All three winners about the same time. Out of the contenders only spencer struggled.

Gosh, it's so helpful to have a first round of races that eliminate all of 3 athletes from the field.

How so? Hastings and Spencer are probably her biggest comp. If she is not good enough for them, that still leaves 2 positions open to make the finals.

BTW, I'm so glad that they're doing all the races through 800 with two semis, four to qualify. Mano a mano!!!!

Lane draws and conservation of energy. Hastings and Spencer will force SRR to run a bit harder than normal to get her preferred lane. The top two from each heat are going to get the middle lanes if I recall correctly and then the other 4 gets scrambled between 1, 2, 7 and 8. SRR would probably want to expend the least amount of energy taking into consideration the lack of race sharpness plus the fact she simply doesn't know her limits yet I assume.

Or maybe she is trying to conserve as much energy. She has 2 more rounds and unlike the rest of them has had a rather busy collegiate season.

If she can't get in the top-4 out of this semi then she doesn't deserve to be at the WC.

So, in all the sprints at Des Moines it appears top 4 advance from each semi, no one advances on time - is that common?... or, maybe the 3-semi format used at OT, etc. is what I'm used to? But SRR certainly has to work a lot harder in heat 2 it appears.

In a steady-state world, yes. But SRR is not in a steady-state world. She is 2 seconds faster in a heat than in the DL race. Clearly she is better. She probably needs more time to be fully ready for rounds. Given this result, I would beat that by WCs time SRR will be the best American, but she might not yet be ready for three rounds.

It seems likely that the rounds are a bit much for her conditioning at this stage, although partly it is her speed that is lacking. Not going to get an uptick for the final. She should be solid for the relay by the WCs and will have the advantage of not racing the 400 (probably).

Courtney Okolo with a great run in the junior section, going 51.04 - a big PR... may have made the senior relay squad with that time.

Also a great run by high schooler Kendall Baisden, new HS #1, going 52.03.
