Great video. Dispels all the notion of folks who believe that Bolt was an overnight success.

Can you name a single poster on this board that has said that he was an overnight success, except for those of us who said he 19.9x made him an overnight success at 16?

That said, he did take a big jump up in class when he first ran the fabulous 100 in NY, beating Gay.

Only people who don't follow track & field think Bolt came out of nowhere to have overnight success in Beijing 2008.

And most people who don't follow track & field don't ever visit this web site, so they'll never see this thread.

Wrong. He made a big step up when he ran 9.76 at the Jamaica Invitational in 2008. There were alot of doubters then including Michael Johnson about that race.

Sorry but I don't memorize posters names. Numerous posters over the years had doubts about Bolt initially.

Bolt was world champion junior with 15 years¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
Sub20 in 200 with 17 years¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

It is very sure that he does not appear suddenly

He had several important injuries 18-20 years that got slow very much his progression.
And yes, like jamboy tells, when he got 9.76 with 21 years in kingston was his big step.
And when he got his WR in NY he got a big fame in all world. 8-)

Exactly. In fact, to me at least, he went for several years as something of a "we-thought-he-was-going-to-be-great-but..." guy. I distinctly recall being at the Lausanne meet in about 2006, standing near the entrance to the warm-up field as the big names were coming and going. I was with a British friend who didn't know "all" the names and I was mentioning (or confirming) who was who as they came past. I remember that Bolt was standing in right in front of us, waiting quietly, with essentially no fan or media interest at all (at least in that time). At a point when no one else was coming or going in front of us, I said to my friend "And that's Usain Bolt right there; he was the 'next big thing' a few years ago..."

The guy won a silver medal in the 200 at Osaka. Who said he came out of nowhere?

I remember thinking "Uh Oh" (due to my nationalistic loyalty to a few American sprinters), when I first saw Usain Bolt's improved physique and definition at the starting line in May of 2008. He obviously became more dedicated and spent more time in the weight room and on improving the fitness of his entire body during the months after the 2007 WC's in Osaka. With the increase in his overall body strength in 2008 came the start of the even more amazing times. Regardless of how talented a 200m runner he was prior to 2008, I don't think too many of us had a clue of what we'd see from him in the 100 in 2008, 2009, and after.

Well, in his very first professional race at 100m he ran 10.03. That is in 2007. That in itself should have been a major indicator of what to come with additional training.

The following year with much more training. He knew what to expect. Before his race at the Jamaica Invitational, he predicted a time of 9.85. Well, he ran much faster at 9.76.

I remember talking to Coach Mills and a couple of others at one of the early NYC <>League meets about Bolt the 1/4 miler... what if Mills had his way and Bolt stayed with the long sprint(although the 800 seems to be the long sprint nowadays ) what numbers would he be putting up?

toot! toot Sir Roger Day!
