T&FN's take is that altitude is neutral for the 800.

No secret, since Running Times had an article on it, but Cranny is coached (very intelligently and cautiously) by Jason Hartmann, 4th placer in the last 2 Boston Marathons.

That is probably most accurate for fast men; as speed drops the aiding effect of thin are drops while the reduced partial pressure of oxygen becomes more important over the longer time to finish.
