also i believe the real high school boys 800 meter record is held by billy konchellah who was a student at mission viejo when he ran a time that is better than michael granvilles high school time. i heard konchellah tried to be on the team and did most of the runs with the high school, but konchellah wanted to run with edwin moses and henry rono a couple of times a week, but the coach said, he has to do all his workouts with the team to be on the team.

Couldn't agree more. High school sports are far too bound up by silly rules. How could a coach not support the opportunity of an athlete of Konchellah's caliber to train in world class company a couple of times a week ? Sounds to me like an effort to avoid sharing any credit for the athlete's success ...

Sounds to me like a complete misinterpretation of the situation by some.

http://articles.latimes.com/1991-11-29/ ... igh-school

Gene Gurule, the track and field coach at Mission Viejo in 1980, says he tried to get Konchellah on the team.

"Yes, we did try," Gurule said. "At that particular time, he was running for Gordon Cooper, and I guess Gordon had his own plans about what he wanted to do for him.

    1.56,64 .... 4.11,10 ..... 9.18,01 (Tamagno)
    1.57,2 ..... 4.17,01 ..... 9.24,12 (Ogden)
    1.56,84 .... 4.17,99 ..... 9.17,42 (Rocha)
Was just a matter of time. Tamagno drops his 1.59,92 PB to 1.56,64 last week, regaining the grade-9 lead over Rocha. Tamagno won the Century League Finals (4.14,27), recording his third sub-4.15 and fourth sub-4.20 on the season. His 4.14,27 leads all CIF SS Div 3 qualifiers. Rocha tripled at his conference, with Ogden and Tamagno both opting for the 1.600m/3.200m double.

In a girl's 4 X 800 relay, a team won in about 9:38. (Timed on my wristwatch!)
Not impressed?
This team's splits were very even....2:22, 2:26, 2:26, and 2:24 (approx, timed at hand-off by my watch).
Still not impressed?
Okay, then how about this??

The team, James Island (SC), running in the State Championship yesterday, consisted of....

two 7th graders (first 2 legs).....
two 9th graders (last 2 legs)!!

Video of whole day's events (80 minutes long) available for free on front page link.
The relay is the first event on the video.

at the risk of being pedantic, allow me to observe that (as epelle realizes, but I don't think many picked up on it), if you look in the dictionary, "underclass" means a frosh or a soph. Juniors are not underclass, even though most people use underclass as a synonym for non-senior.

Yes but the two-year separation is not 9 and 11 it is 9 and 7, so frosh and pre-pre-frosh, or am I missing something here?

That's what it used to mean. The word is evolving, and if you go to vocabulary.com, you see it defined as "an undergraduate who is not yet a senior."

Yea, some dumb website. It's on the internet!

Or the OED which defines an underclass(men/women) as Frosh or soph.

Week-ending 12.5 update:
    1.56,64 .... 4.11,10 ..... 9.16,65 (Tamagno)
    1.57,2 ..... 4.17,01 ..... 9.18,85 (Ogden)
    1.56,84 .... 4.17,99 ..... 9.17,42 (Rocha)
Tamagno adds one more sub-4.20 to his ledger at CIF SS Div 3 prelims; doubled back and dropped his 3.200m PB from 9.18,01 to 9.16,65. Ogden is concentrating solely on the 3.200m and dropped his PB from 9.24,12 to 9.18,85. Rocha appears not to have participated in the CIF SS Div 1 prelims.

Caleb Webb (10/Big Bear) could be a Southern Section sleeper, having dropped five seconds from his PB in running his first sub-4.20 (4.18,53) at CIF SS Div 4. He doubled back with a 9.23,78 PB in his first 3.200m on the season (previous PB 9.57,68 last year in grade-9). Webb's 1.600m was only the third time he's been under 4.30, with his 9.23 only the second time he's been under 10.00.

Efraimson (10) ran her third lifetime sub-2.10 (2.09,74) up at the 4A GSHL District Championships, just missing her season's best of 2.09,63. She'd earlier run 4.50,24 to win the 1.600m.

Tamagno ran 4.13,05 (3rd-fastest grade-9 in CA history) at CIF Southern Section D3 in finishing in the runner-up spot; he also earned a trip to the Masters Meet with a 6th in the 3.200m. Ogden advanced to Masters with a 3rd in his 3.200m sectional race, with Webb improving his 3.200m to 9.20,41 (2nd place/D4).

Serra's Malik Roberson (10) won the boy's D4 100m final with a windy 10,46w (+3,5) and ran to 3rd to two teammates in the 200m (21,69/+1,2). Upland's Myles Valentine (10) raced to an impressive 10,48 (+1,1)/21,06 (+1,4) double victory in the D1 final after 10,37w (+2,7)/21,05 (+1,2) qualifiers last week.

Harvard Westlake's Courtney Corrin (9) won the girl's D3 long jump competition with a fantastic 20-9 (6.32m) (wind: ?). Margaux Jones (10) won the D1 final with a 20-2,75 (6.16m) (wind: ?).

The NY Times has an (overly?) long piece on "The Best Distance Runner for Her Age" (16), Alana Hadley (10). She is aiming to run 2:40, running 100+/week over seven weeks. She will likely not get the US age 16 best [Cathy O’Brien's Trials ninth place 2:34:24].

I saw a tweet that said she had some problems during the race...sometime around the halfway mark....and "jogged" it in....final time was 2:58:22.

Another tweet has more details.
She was on 2:44 pace at halfway, but then tripped on a curb, hurt her hamstring, and "jogged it in, limping".

Efraimson, the WA state 4A cross champion, dropped her 800m down from 2.08,92 to 2.06,54 up in Tacoma, at the 4A District III-IV Championships six days back (18.5).

More noteworthy, however, was that she then went on to run a Washington (state) 4A record, Washington state grade-10 record, and state meet record of 4.39,25 (67,8 - 2.20,8 (73,0) - 3.33,7 (72,9) - 4.39,2 (65,4)) in the 1.600m last evening to defeat Alexis Fuller (4.51,37) (68,1 - 2.23,2 (75,1) - 3.39,4 (76.2) - 4.51,3 (71,9)), another grade-10 standout.

Efraimson is the Washington state grade-9 1.600m holder at 4.40,77, and this new 1.600m PB moves her up to 2nd all-time in the state of Washington, behind Brie Felnagle's 4.38,01 enroute to her 4.39,71y (2nd to Bowman's 4.36,95y) at the 2005 Nike Outdoor Nationals. Efraimson did nab Felnagle's 4A meet record (4.42,28).

Efraimson also anchored her non-qualifying 4x400m team.

Two grade-9 kids make it out of the always tough CIF Masters Meet in the 1.600m to qualify for the state prelims, with Amanda Gehrich (Tesoro) and Tamagno (Brea) both taking the fifth spot in their races, running 4.55,36 and 4.13,04, respectively. All 12 boys finalists finished between 4.12,45 and 4.14,71. That was Tamagno's fifth sub-4.15 of his first high school season. If he's got gas left in the tank, he might crack 4.10 in Fresno next week-end.

Valentine (Upland/10) continued his hot streak of sprinting, placing 2nd in the 100m in 10,22w (+2,1) and 3rd in the 200m in 21,15 (+2,0). That's 10,48w, 10,37w and 10,22w in his past three 100m sprints.

Webb drops a full 11 seconds from his 3.200m on fresh legs, running 9.09,41 with an 8th place finish in the boy's race. Recall, he was at 9.57,68 last season in grade-9.

Merritt won her first Masters Championship pole vault with a 13-3 (4.03m) mark, after placing 2nd in last year's meet.

Corrin (9) and Jones (10) jumped over 20 feet in the long jump after winning their respective divisional meets last week, with the ninth-grader Corrin at 20-5.25 (6.22m) besting Jones' 20-3.50 (6.18m).

Central Section Finals (CA):

Knevelbaard (10) dropped his 1.600m down from 4.15,95 to 4.14,97.

Buchanan grade-9 long sprinter Hannah Waller won the girl's 400m in 54,42; she finished fourth in the 200m.

Joey Souza (10/Kingsburg) won the boy's long jump with a 23-8.25 (7.21m).

Grade-9 triple jumper Nashedah Mumin (Mission Oak) won her event with a 39-9.50 (12.12m).

Another grade-9 achiever, Rhesa Foster (Clovis North), won the long jump with a 19-10.50 (6.05m) effort, a mark which won the competition by over a foot.

Epelle - don't forget Zach Brehm, #1 underclassman in 1600/mile, 4:09.27, right?

gktrack, cheers for the info on Brehm. It's not populating on his dyestat page: http://parser.dyestat.com/search.jsp?athID=230385 , but I've added him atop the 1.600m.

He's on milesplit - results below. I've had more luck with milesplit vs. dyestat the last year or so.
And it was for the full mile I believe, so you can add him to both your sections with a qualifier for the 1600 I guess. Enjoyed your full post.

Probably should post this on "Outdoor Outlook--High School" thread, but both noticeably wind-aided and both at altitude...

Watching the PTF on Flotrack.
Just saw a great performance by a middle school girl named Sophie Cantine!!

Don't know if she's 7th or 8th grade....or 6th!!!!!......
but she broke the meet record for the middle school girl's 1500 with a time of 4:34.46.......well under 5:00 mile pace!!

And she ran practically the whole race by herself!!!
After a first lap of 67 (!!!!!), I thought she'd be dying....
but no, she kept going, hitting 800 in about 2:21.
She came by 1000 all alone in 3:01.

And she finished looking fresher than when she started!!!
No pain, no grimace, just walked away!!

Well, back to the PTF!!
Great meet!!
Lots to report!!

Alan Webb started the boys middle school mile!!
Reported that his wife, Laura, will be in the open SC tonight!!!
Shalane Flanagan is in attendance too!!

gktrack, brilliant! Looks like the USA men will have a really good crop of 5.000m runners in the coming years. Especially given the depth at 3.000/3.200m by the underclassmen. Cheers for the additions.
