Thanks for the post - I couldn't find that result. I was hoping for a bit more, but I'll take a 10.11 after not racing for 10+ months. Did anyone press him at any point in the race?

The Oxy track is not a premium sprinter's track. Not Gay's 9.86/0.2 but a bit closer than the almost 3-tenths gap it appears to show.

It is almost impossible that if Gay and Dix are healthy in trials, Dix can to get place for 100m in Moscow.
If he gets place in the final and gets 4th,5h or 6th place and a possible place for 4x100 in rounds in Moscow(not in the final)will be a big prize for him

In 200m although he is great we will see.
Rounds in 200 after almost 1 year without run will not be easy.

Walter Dix Status?

Postby lovetorun » Wed May 22, 2013 8:15 am

Anyone know what's going on with Walter Dix this season? Haven't heard or seen anything about him.

Would love to see him in top form again...and see what he,Gay, Gatlin and Rogers could do in the 4 X 100 relay in Moscow.

I'd rather see Dix, Bailey, Gatlin and Gay in Moscow.

There was a previous thread on this labeled "Walter Dix???", but I believe he's only run once this year.

According to USATF, he's his own agent. So I would think he'd have some difficulty entering big meets. I don't know....

He's actually run twice this season, but that's not unusual for him. In both of his medal seasons (2008 and 2011) he had run only 2 individual outdoor races by this date.

What kind of shape will he be in at the Nationals? I guess we'll find out then.

the difference between 1.0 and -0.8 is a tenth of a second; give him a +1.9 wind and the total correct is 0.16 => 9.95/1.9 which people would probably think was decent (and, that track is not a sprinters track; I think it was a training track for the 1984 Games).

In regards to the sprint-friendliness of the Oxy track, consider that they just held the elite High Performance distance meet there. From my memory, it's not a hard surface, but it yields fast times in the 200 and up because of really long and wide curves.

But that probably means that it is the 'standard' 85/115 straight/curve configuration. Since the 100 is on the straight it would not have influenced his mark in a particularly positive way. I do not know what the differential is. However, I think about the differences we saw in Gatlin, wherein is first set of races were on these secondary track and later he was faster on the premium tracks, and would guess that there is a 0.03 to 0.06 difference. Pure speculation on my part.

But the message is that he was not particularly slow for a first race.

I think that they used the same track strategy; quality track with durability and across a range. It will not be a rock-hard WC/DL performance track, I do not think.

That Track is fast! High Schoolers were flying there at League level 5/2/13. 100M Boys 10.4 Khalfani Muhammad to Last place 10.8 I believe.Plus Loyola High ran 40.89 in the 4x1. 3 Girls Teams ran 47 low to 47 mid.The Mission League had their Finals there.Check www.PrepCalTrack.com for Mission League Results.Or www.royalresults.com .

Not following the 10.30 -0.8 next to the 10.11

The line was pulled from the results, so the 10.30 was probably his entry time, the -0.8 is the wind. The adjustment I used was -0.8 to 0 => 0.05. Going to +1.0 wind would add another 0.06 of adjustment (down to 9.99/1.0. Give him almost the max wind of 1.9 and the adjustment would be +0.05 + 0.11 = 0.16, subtract from 10.11 and you get 9.95.

What I was saying was that his mark would have been more notable if the quality of the effort was the same but instead of a headwind he had the about the maximum tailwind. The a 9.95/1.9 would have been commented on as a pretty good opener.

[Did I miss something; I have been wrapped with both the regional and some family issues, so my attention is a bit compromised.]

Walter's 2 races thus far...(using Mureika's or '95 Big Red Book adjustments for wind)
May 04: 10.11 (1.0) = 10.16 (0.0) or 10.19 (0.0)
May 12: 10.30 (-0.8) = 10.25 (0.0) or 10.23 (0.0)
Not sub-10 with any legal wind, and in ZELLGADISS' grey area... but respectable May times for someone we have not seen since the Oly Trials.

Here's how he looked in his 10.11 (1.0) race...

OK, that explains things; I was parsing the results to indicate that the race was 10.11/-0.8 rather than 10.11/1.0. Loses 0.10 seconds in quality.

Yes, very wide curves! It appears to me to have approx. 65 m straights, shorter than any other track I can think of offhand. There are a few tracks with straights in the range of 72 to 75 m (IAAF Standard tracks have 84.39 m straights).

In fact, Oxy's track has such wide turns that I believe that a 200 or 400 run in Lane 8 there would be illegal for AR or WR purposes because it has a measure radius in excess of 50 m, per USATF Rule 263.6 and IAAF Rule 260.18(c).

Same reason I am guessing that Richard Thompson left after a year as did Jaysuma Ndure. Ahmad Rashad departed a month ago. My understanding is only male sprinter left in the camp is Ryan Bailey. Not sure the exact reason or reasons but the quick departure is worth questioning.

I wish he'd learn to push a little bit, especially out of the blocks.
