Last year she shocked by running the prelim in 51.99 when no one was expecting it, then running 51.02 in the Final. It is not certain what the implies, but doing the hurdles and the 4x400, 4x100 (?) and 200 is harder than doing the flat race.

I think Shaunae Miller is going to make a lot of girls switch to the 400 hurdles.

Not a lot of cover in the 400h with a high-placing Olympic Finalist there.

What was surprising was how well Miller ran indoors because not all athletes big like she is do well in that environment. Of course, this was a banked 200, not a flat 200 or a 176y/160m.

Isn't Moline still running NCAA? Maybe I am just mistaken.

Ashley with a busy day at the Big10's after a couple rounds yesterday - anchored both relays today, and in between won the 400 in 52.27 and the 200 in 23.20 (-0.5).

Last year as a freshman she did the same thing having her huge breakout, pushing hard with 51.9x/51.02 and 23-low/22.9x; however, the weather was much nicer last year (in Madison) than this weekend in Columbus. Plus, I think she knows that this year the focus is more on the NCAA and then USATF rather than Big Tens/NCAA.

I still believe Shaunea Miller will decimate the 400m field if she is fit. It will be a nice battle between Spencer, Miller and George.

I'm still curious as to what happened to Miller. She ran the 3rd leg of the 4x1 at SEC's but was a last minute scratch from the 400m final...

That's why I added the 'if she is fit' qualifier because I too am confused as to why she didn't run the 400m finals.

Just read an article that stated Ashley Spencers diversion from the hurdles in 2012 was due to a severe bout of food poisining that caused her to miss alot of training she was lacking hurdle fitness.

It's amazing to think a Big Ten Double, NCAA title, World Junior Title and Record(50.50) was the result of a "botched" season.

NCAA Regionals entries are now up, and Spencer has scratched from the hurdles (and 100 and 200), so no NCAA for her in that event, just the flat 400.

Doesn't mean she can't switch back for USATF of course.

Just a note that Spencer is contesting the 400m at regionals not the hurdles.

The West Regional has all-star 400 runners

Heat 1 Preliminaries 1 Francis, Phyllis JR Oregon 52.91Q
Heat 2 Preliminaries 1 Dixon, Diamond JR Kansas 52.60Q
Heat 3 Preliminaries 1 George, Regina SR Arkansas 51.27Q
Heat 4 Preliminaries 1 Spencer, Ashley SO Illinois 52.50Q
Heat 6 Preliminaries 1 Okolo, Courtney FR Texas 52.13Q

Since they only need to be top 12 they will probably keep their powder dry until NCAA Finals/Oregon

No. 3 qualifier out of the first round with a heat-wining 52.50.

I really liked the expression on Spencer's face after crossing the 50.88 finish. Seemed to be relatively surprised with the time. Controlled race from the looks of it.

Miller's race appeared similar in manner as well. They both make good use of transport length and requisite fiber allocation. I would've thought that Francis (OR) had emerged as well.

I don't know who Ashley Spencer is and i have no idea of her hurdling ability but the 400H is an event that is there for the taking, I don't just mean right now but historically. If someone with sub 50 400m ability bothers to learn basic/consistent technique, GOAT status is up for grabs

Apart from Sally Gunnel and Nezha Bidouane no top flight 400mh hurdlers have ever been consistent technically. It is too easy just to make do when the barriers are so low

When someone can dominate over the past few years doing this

Then the 400h is a very good choice for someone who has their eye on legend status

You went on and on with little O; she will be lucky to do this year what Spencer has already done (won WJr ~50.50) in her first serious year at the 400; mainly she did 300h and 4x400 in high school. She had an outside chance of being a gold medalist (running prelims) but took the more developmental route.

She certainly looks better as a 400 then 400h; her coach is Buford-Bailey a TOP 400h runner.
