VCB To run 200m in Bahamas April 13th

One of the world's most decorated female track and field stars has confirmed her participation in the "Islands of The Bahamas Chris Brown Invitational" and is "looking forward to returning to The Bahamas."

She will also run the 200m at the Addidas DL in New York on May 25th.

She is also scheduled to run the 100m at the Jamaica Invitational on May 4th.

Was reading her blog earlier.....apparently she has run a 400m and a 4x4 so far this season. I'm glad she has been working on her endurance training ....looking forward to good things from her this season.

Is it possible that we've seen the last of VCB on the medal stand at a Major?

Last year she was 3rd in a 100m and 4th in the 200m - and the 200m is considered to be her "better" event. But she wasn't just edged out in the deuce, she was beaten; and there are a few additions to the sprints this year who might make VCB's 200m podium possibilities much more difficult. Consider that SAFP is now the BEST Jamaican 200m runner; consider also that Jeter MAY now be a better 200m runner than VCB and consider that Felix IS a better 200m runner than VCB...it just means that VCB might be fighting with the up-and-comers to beat one of the top-3 or even make it into a final if she gets a bad semi draw. Yes, she was 3rd in the 100m but I have to believe that relative newcomer, nee Madison(?), will be better; that Felix who had a few big PBs last year will be better, that Baptiste makes the permanent jump and that last year finalist Ahoure -on the strength of an incredible indoor season- can make the jump to the higher class, too. Basically, even if VCB is no slower than she was last year, there is real possibility that she won't medal in either event.

Other women sprinters to watch in 2013.
Blessing Okagbare
Kelly Ann Baptiste
Sherone Simpson
Kerron Stewart

I wouldn't read too much into that....she's said before that she had a few problems last year(what they were I'm not sure)but people always count her out and everytime she comes in and gets a medal .She knows that the level has been raised and what she has to do .She already looks to be running more 200m this season .I'd like to see her back in some 22 flat shape or sub 22 ala 2010 .On a different not anyone knows what events Ms Felix is doing this year...saw that she is running the 400m in Doha

I wouldn't expect you to read that much into that; you started the thread...you must be particularly enamored of VCB. BUT, it stands to reason that at some point VCB MAY be looking at her last days OR may begin to see a decline. There are many women who continued to run well after age 30, but many of them already had children - VCB does not. Not saying that she wants any, I'm just saying that history shows us that women usually do, especially if they're married.

Also, it is false to say "people always count her out". She's been the top woman for nearly a decade (if she runs sub-11 this year, it will be her 10th straight year of running sub-10. I think the only other woman who can claim 10 straight years of sub-10 is Merlene Ottey) in a decade where the women's sprints haven't been particularly competitive for the top women, imo. As for her "problems"...are they not just excuses? VCB had her best 100m season ever - and she hung on for 3rd. She also had one of her worse 200 seasons ever. That's a reality and it looks, from the cheap stupid seats, like a choice in training/coaching.

No need to start writing off Veronica. Unfortunately for Veronica, she put all her focus and training in the one event last year(100m) since it is the only race she does not have a gold medal(VC has won WC 100/200 and Olympic 200m(twice).

She really wanted that 100m gold so bad. Unfortunately, even when we give our best efforts, it is sometimes not good enough. It was obvious in her focusing on the 100m gold, she did not prepare enough in terms of endurance/overdistance work and speed endurance and it showed since she slowed badly after 100m.

This year however, she is back training fully for both events. She has done alot of background/overdistance work in the fall. She has run 400m and 4 x 400m already this season and has a couple 200m lined up.

Veronica will be fine.

VCB might need to concentrate on one event for the WCs, but with both 100 and 200 work for her 200. In the 100 she also faces the possibility that one of the three or four college sprinters will continue to improve and move down in to the medal range of 10.8x (not long ago 11.0x won the thing!).

Similarly, there are several pretty good collegiate 200 runners eager to make the next jump. In fact, what might keep them from taking a place on the podium is that there are so many of them that they will fight hard all through the collegiate season and then at the Trials and be less competitive by the time that the WCs come around.

VCB was hurt in some way in 2012 which didn't allow her to do the work to run a 200m in the way that she can. She ran as best she could but didn't have the strength required. Her 100m was her best season ever and fastest in a rounds situation in London in what was a close final. Looking at the race I think she gets in front at half way from a good start for her, but she just can't hold of Jeter, or SAFP who runs a great second half.

Progression isn't linear either, just because Okagbare, Madison and Ahoure improved last year, doesn't mean they'll get faster this year. That said, Blessing's recent 300m and Murielle's indoor season are good indications they'll probably be factors this year.

As long as Campbell Brown is competing, she'll always be a factor. With that said, I think her 200 campaign this year will be nothing to ignore.

BTW, what did Okagbare run in the 300m?

Okagbare went 37 flat in her first ever 300, Carmelita Jeter was second with a time close to 37.5... not bad since these two are 100 metres specialists more than 200 metres ones.
