Florida Relays 2013

Postby gktrack » Wed Apr 03, 2013 12:52 pm

A quick browse thru the accepted entries finds a dozen or two of last year's US top-10 performers (and whoever I missed), many opening their outdoor season...

Men's 110H: US 2012 #'s 3,4,6,7 - Oliver, Porter, Hicks, Wilson
Men's 400H: Dutch, Wyatt
Women's Sprints: Freeman, Scott, Trotter, Hastings, McCorory, Rucker
Men's Sprints: McQuay, Nellum, Verberg... also Bracy
Men's Shot: Hoffa

Ex-Gator's Claye and Taylor not on accepted entries for horizontal jumps, but may be doing some sprinting?

On the H.S. side, L. Whitfield is entered in the 100, along with 400 prep outdoor leader C. Ways... but no L. Whitfield/K. Williams/T. Bromell showdown as I was hoping.

Anyone competing on Thursday will have a problem because of some severe weather predicted. Wouldn't shock me to see that part of the meet wiped out.

Long as that's cleared out by Friday 10am when I'm there!

Also of note at the Florida Relays this weekend:
- M. Rodgers also in the men's 100, same heat as Bracy.
- Heat sheets now show men's 400 also includes J. Mance (running unattached) w/ T. Lawrence and J. Hughes, but in a different heat that Nellum/Verburg, etc. It'll be interesting to see how Mance responds on the track.
Add: Should be expecting a good early season 400 time with 7 of last year's top 21 US 400 runners in the first two heats, all below 45.5 last year.

HSer Andres Arroyo 1:47.79 800m

That's #6 A-T behind Alan Webb

I have the feeling this guy is going well under 4 minutes for the mile.

1:47.79 - wow, a great run by Arroyo, and yes, he's on path to be the next HS 4 minute miler.

Also, T. Bromell runs a 10.34 (1.0) in H.S. 100 heats, bettering his own 2013 US #1 legal H.S. mark to date. It'll be Bromell and L. Whitfield tomorrow, which should be a great final.

I'll bet Arroyo's run had Florida's Mike Holloway smiling... I believe he'll be attending Florida next year, along with N. Uruburu (400m) and a few others. BTW, Florida State also has some great sprint recruits in L. Whitfield (100/200), M. Cherry (200/400) and K. Davis-White (100/200).

A couple of oddities on today's results page.

1. The first running event is listed as "4000 meter distance medley relay" I KNOW the total distance for the DMR is 4K, but I've NEVER seen it called by that name...with the distance included.

2. The meet record for this 4000 meter relay (for HS girls) is listed as 20:56.31.....from 2011.
Huh?? 20:56 for 4K?? That's slower pace than even that USATF women's mile!! Maybe that's the record for the 4X1 mile??

The listed record is 12:17 for the DMR.

In 2011 they ran a 4 x 1600.

I've seen the DMR listed as the 4000m DMR....I think Penn has done this in the past.

More impressive is her .37 margin of victory over Candyce McGrone, who's a competent sprinter in her own right.

O. Freeman 11.02 - for perspective, only 5 US runners faster last year, 12 worldwide in 2012, and it's early April.

Also, Florida 400 men - great open 400's for freshmen A. Hall and N. Glass... along with soph's Dukes and Graham Jr, it's just a matter of time before they go sub 3:00 and challenge LSU's 4x4 NCAA record of 2:59.59.

The 800's were taken by:

Chanelle Price---2:02.81
Sean Obinwa----1:47.66

BTW, High Schooler Andres Arroyo would have taken 2nd in this race with his 1:47.79!!
And Sabrina Southerland would have taken 2nd in the women's race with her indoor 2:03.59!!

For more context...she ran 11.10 on April 6, 2012 in Gainesville, FL and it remained her SB for the year. 11.02 may end the year as her PB if last year is the guide.

More on the m100..
From watching the race video of section 1, it appears as if Bracy felt a hamstring pull as early as 50m into the race.

Octavious Freeman doubled back in the 200 with a legal (1.8) 22.85, edging Natosha Hastings (22.89).
"Long Jump Queen" Dee Dee Trotter ran 23.07 (1.6) in another heat..

Also, Johnny Dutch soloed a 400H in 49.09.

Much windier today than last night from what I've heard. So I'm not sure Arroyo runs quite that fast if he ran it today. Too bad he didn't run the 1600m today as originally entered.

Anyone know about the wind reading on Green's TJ??
The entire event had "NWI" on all the results.
Did the machine break down during the TJ??

If legal, that beats his indoor PR of 51-6 and 1/2.

The TJ goes in the same direction as the sprints, so whatever races were run then will give you an idea. It was mostly a cross-wind, but every now and then it swung into a cross-tail.

Thanks!
But for a mark to be considered "legal", doesn't there need to be an "official" wind reading taken?
Otherwise, it's just guesswork!!
Green's mark isn't a record, but it would be his PR.....if the wind reading was legal!!

I don't know the rules on this, but it would seem to me that you'd need an official reading!!
