Southerland is Armory AOY--Not Cain?

Postby aaronk » Thu Mar 28, 2013 12:57 pm

The article (on the front page) has the video of Sabrina Southerland's 2:03.59 800.
I LOVE watching that video!!
And the article also detailed what was a very good overall season for her in the Armory.

But as I read the article, I thought.....What about Mary Cain's Armory season?
She SMASHED the ancient HSR's for the 1500 and one mile.....TWICE!!
And she beat several professional and collegiate athletes.....losing only to Sarah Bowman Brown and Nicole Sifuentes in one race, then to Sheila Reid in the 2nd race.
She beat everyone else....all of them 5 to 10 or more years older than her!!

What does it take to be named Armory AOY?

Well, at the bottom of the article is the explanation.
She didn't run for her HS...and didn't race against HS'ers!!
The AOY award is for those who did!!

Do you think that's fair??
Do you think Cain got penalized for being....PHENOMENAL??

Taking NOTHING away from Southerland, I'm not so sure the Armory played fair!!

If they followed their own rules then they must have played fair.

Maybe it's because from that 4:11.01 last year everyone knew what Mary Cain was capable of...

...But absolutely no one saw Sabrina Southerland's 2:03.59 performance coming! And that performance made it possible for a head-to-head battle for the HSR and sub-2:00.00, and a 3-way battle (with Ajee Wilson) for the AJR.

Isn't the reasoning pretty self explanatory?

If Cain was "penalized" it was for not competing vs. High Schoolers for which the award is apparently based on.
