Jordan Hasay's First 10000 Meters

Postby aaronk » Tue Mar 26, 2013 9:03 am

I guess the only question to ask is

How will she do?

My opinion is....
she could either blow up and DNF or run 33+ or slower....
or she could blast a 32:30 or faster, possibly going sub-32:00.
Heads or tails. Call it!

No one's biting!
Okay, so let's make it a contest.
Guess Hasay's ACTUAL time....to the hundredths!!
To break any ties, also guess her PLACE!!

I'll start.
She's going to run 32:25.10.
She'll place 3rd.

The men's 5000 final entry list has 128 names on it!!
Five races.....with about 25-26 in each?

The women?
Probably 3 races....unless there's a lot of DNS's.

And yes, it's the Stanford meet this weekend.
Sorry for not pointing that out earlier.

One question I'd have re Hasay and the other collegians is are they going for NCAA qualifiers...and the process of qualifying for the 10,000 I'm not sure...or something at a higher level such as a WC qualifier in one fashion or another A/B or USATF qualifier. That might dictate the pace for them....or at least some of them.

Last year's pace appears to be have been 32:30, so there's the real over/under. I'm going strong 'under'.

I'd figure that a few of the people in this race are trying to get a World Championship qualifier.

Since most of what I do in life could be described as playing a fool's game, I'll go ahead w/o knowing the desired pace, or the composition of the fields from this list of 77 contestants...

I haven't gone through the bios of everyone on this huge list, but so far, I can only find these who have ever run sub-33:

Goucher 30:55 (2008); 31:16 (2011)
Kellner 32:58 (2012)
Armstrong-Peyton 32:59 (2011)

I will be very (happily) surprised if anyone in these fields other than Goucher runs sub-33. What I'm seeing right now are overcrowded fields of athletes who have little or no experience with the 10,000, running the first one of the season -- if not of their careers -- etc. I'm guessing that the pace will get away from them, but in the direction of going very slow (for them). And while some of these may have a fast finish, overall, lots of 33:xx times.

(I do think Hasay's 2013 performances -- 8:57, 15:40 -- suggest she is in mid-32 shape. I would like to see it in this race, but the size and composition of the fields, as I understand them at this moment, says 33+.)

And as usual, I will probably be wrong about all of this. :)

As these Stanford distance races are more time trials than races, the premium is on pace/splits/final time. Everyone is going there expressly to run a fast time, so that's why I see faster times than a mere 'race' would result in. It's incumbent on the front runners to actually help each other in keeping the pace fresh. We Marks Snobs love these affairs! :D

Her times are comparatively better for the 3K than the 5k, so I don't know why they think she will do better at longer distances.

I consider myself one of the 'they' who think that, like Webb before her, she can excel in a foray into the 10K.

To Exrun's point, Webb did not run comparatively as well at 10000m as he did at, say, the mile.

The key to the pace might be in Kara Goucher's entry.
Why is she running?
To get an "A" for the WC?
Or just as a speed workout for Boston?

She tweeted that she thinks her 10K will be "ugly"!!

As for Webb, I'd say a 27:34 in your first-ever 10K ain't slouchin'!!

Kara Goucher is running the 10,000 both as a Boston tune-up and in an attempt to get the World Champs "A" standard. I'm sure she'll be happy to run as easily as possible and still dip under 31:45 (although getting the "B" standard might be just as good, since I assume if she runs the U.S. Champs and places top 3, the other two would have the "A").

Shalane Flanagan, Goucher's teammate, who also is running Boston, will also compete in the Stanford 10,000 according to her Twitter feed, although she didn't appear in the original confirmed entries.

I'm not aware of a rabbit, but if they throw one in there, I assume it would be just to get the pace going for a few laps.

I imagine it'll be two races, with Goucher/Flanagan well ahead of the rest of the competitors. I have no inside knowledge, but I doubt Hasay will be aggressive the first half in her debut.

Zackly - few Ami women can even run a 3000 at 10000 A-qualifier pace.

It's not at all but it's not on par at all with his mile which was Exrun's point.

Sections for this (and other events at this meet) now posted. As noted above, 10km section 1, which includes Goucher and Hasay, also now includes Shalane Flanagan.

Not about Hasay...or the 10K....but saw Brianna Nerud will run the SC.
Been wondering about her.
Hopefully, she'll get her first sub-10 here.

Also in Nerud's section will be Anna Willard!!
Did Anna Pierce get a divorce, or go back to using her maiden name?
Is this the same person??
If so, very interesting that she's returning to the steeple....at least for this one race!

Scratch any fast time predictions for Hasay this time around!
In a FloTrack interview (front page), she said she'll be running the 1st 5K "conservatively", then see what she can do in the 2nd half.
She said she's NOT going for a specific time.
But if she feels good, she'll run another 10K...probably at the May Stanford meet...and try for an "A" standard time.

Let's say she runs the Cardinal 10k. Does that mean no NCAA 10ks? If she ran the NCAA 10k that would mean the two Stanford 10ks plus a regional and then NCAA before getting to the National Champs. Seems a bit much.

Seems like that to me, too, but she did say earlier this year (or at end of xc season) that she was intending to move up to 10k this year. I'll be curious to see how this season develops for her.

While we're awaiting Jordan's 10K, here's some other marks (and names) worth noting from OTHER races.

Georgeanne Moline ran a 400 in 52.92.
The women's SC was won by Alexi Pappas in 9:46.73.
Way back was HSR-holder B Nerud in 10:26.44!!

Amy Weissenbach won her 1500 heat in 4:17.40.....just 0.18 slower than the "faster" heat!!
Is that her 1500 PR??

And Riley Masters ran 1500 in 3:40.77.

Doesn't Stanford seed their heats more "evenly" rather than throwing the faster runners all into one heat?

Her times are comparatively better for the 3K than the 5k, so I don't know why they think she will do better at longer distances.

The WINNER!!

You came within 2 seconds of her actual time!!

BTW, has any American woman ever run a 10K faster in March than Flanagan??

And what happened to Goucher??
Flanagan kind of cleaned her clock!!

When you're beaten by 42 seconds....
and you've run a 30:55 in the past....
and training for a marathon is no excuse, since Flanagan is also in marathon-training....
it's a legitimate question!!

That said, it's still not a bad time for her.
Just not when compared to Flanagan!!
