HS Event Participation

The Milesplit affiliation in Florida, flrunners.com, has a wondrous database of all (mid-to major) HS meets in the state. Its sortable by lots of interesting variables. So I did this one. How many GIRLS run each of the events. This is the answer:

100 5,960
200 5,759
400 4,706
Shot Put 4,228
800 3,957
Discus 3,929
Long Jump 3,844
1,600 3,763
100H 2,887
300H 2,878
High Jump 2,085
Triple Jump 2,059
3,200 1,949
4x100 1,496
Pole Vault 1,373
4x400 1,279
4x800 1,160

3200 on the low-end surprised me, because is sure seems like millions of kids run it, but that's only because there's just one large section of it per (gender per) meet, while there's often dozens of sections of the shorter events. I was actually encouraged by how MANY girls Pole Vault, since less than a third of schools have a pit.

Be interesting to compare to the other 49 states.
My guess (about the 3200) is that , because FL is a hot state, that "distance" events are less popular than the sprints.
I was surprised by the relatively low numbers for the HJ and the relays, especially the 4X100 and 4X400.

Relay numbers are schools, not individuals. As for the HJ, there is a paucity of coaches who have a clue about that event. My less-talented athletes are beating kids with prodigious ups, but are essentially just scissoring. :(

looking @ the girls national #s you find the following:

Weight Throw (1,285)
Two Mile Run (1,494)
Distance Medley Relay (1,514)
Sprint Medley Relay (1,589)
1500 Meter Race Walk (1,809)

which one is considered non-standard and w/o enough participants to be included in the t7fn rankings?

You are interpreting their data wrong. Those are the number of performances in their database, not the number of performers. FYI.
