¶NCAA w400: Georgia frosh MillerShaunae Miller 51.14 in prelims.
Re: NCAA w400Defending Champ Dixon just makes it through
Ashley Spencer slows down to a 51.5 Phyllis Francis just qualifies after going out to lane 3 to dodge a scuffel
Re: NCAA w400Miller and Spencer are now # 8 and # 12 on the ALL TIME Collegiate list.....after the prelims!!
Miller's time ranks as the best ever by a Collegiate Frosh!!
Re: NCAA w400Miller's 51.14 ALSO is now the new Age 18 Indoor 400 record!!
The old record?? Held by none other than someone named..... Sanya Richards (nee Ross)!!
Re: the NCAA Indoor is up and runningThe almost live splits really made it possible to track what was happening in the longer races (e.g., the 5000s, to see if guys were closing the gap or not, which was particularly of interest to me because the UW guys picked off several runners in the last 1000 (and almost got another).
The live listing on the field events is also nice. And, in particular, when not much else is going on with the Heptathlon you get both the live feed with a knowledgeable announcer and the live results to see the details. Who is that announcer in the morning multis?
Re: the NCAA Indoor is up and running
She actually got tripped, probably by the foot in front of her, and put her arm forward for balance... didn't look intentional at all. and highly doubt it would have changed much of the outcome of the race.
Re: the NCAA Indoor is up and runningI don't know. It looked like the Aggie stiff armed the athlete in a bad way and then the girl got tripped by another runner. The girl had a bit of space in Bren the Aggie so the stiff arm looked unnecessary
Re: the NCAA Indoor is up and runningWhat really hurt with the Aggie dust up was that Phyllis Francis, the #2 seed, had to slow and then go wide to avoid the crash, thus relegating her to the lesser group of 4 in today's final. Would have been nice for the fans to see her try to dethrone George, however unlikely the prospect.
Re: the NCAA Indoor is up and running
You obviously haven't watched Texas freshmen Courtney Okolo compete...she is a beast! Especially, at a championship meet. Check her out in the 4x400! However, I'm very impress with Georgia freshmen. She might bust a sub 51 later today.
Re: the NCAA Indoor is up and running
After seeing the different replays, it seems pretty clear that Rucker of South Carolina cut in on Okolo of Texas in lane one, forcing Okolo to go wide in lane 2 and to subsequently cut in front of Mayungbe of Texas A&M. Mayungbe put the arm out to keep from running up on Okolo who had suddenly moved out into lane 2 right in front of her. Fault seems to lie primarily with Rucker of South Carolina for the initial cut in...
Re: the NCAA Indoor is up and running
"lesser" group may be an advantage, actually, given the nature of 400 running on a banked 200 track, where the person in 6 is very hard to beat. Not only because they get more elevation drop than the rest, but also because they can "easily" get to the front, and passing on those tracks isn't easy. If Francis is running against slower people, she'll find it easier to get to the front and with it being a time final, has every chance of a high placing.
Re: the NCAA Indoor is up and running
But there really is no "lesser" group any more the way the heats are seeded... And anyway, she is in lane 4 in the second heat, running inside the Outdoor national champion.
Re: the NCAA Indoor is up and running
These are not Heats, they are Sections of the Final. She was the next to last if she is in 4 of the slower heat, which seems right.
Re: NCAA w400That's Miller's personal best indoors or out.
Re: NCAA w400Don't know why, but the NCAA''s goal is to have "equal" sections. The fastest time goes in one section, the second fastest in another. They breakdown like this: 1-3-5-7, 2-4-6-8.
Re: NCAA w400Since lane draw matters so much indoors, they want to give the preferable lane draw to the top two qualifiers.
Re: NCAA w400
makes perfect sense , ever the innovator Ill propose that it should go : 1-4-5-7 , 2-3-6-8 . .. first seed maybe should not have to face 3rd, the 2nd seed should.
Re: NCAA w400Whoa...50.88 by Miller....Takes down George who goes 51.05
Re: NCAA w400Announcers said # 4 ever, should be #5.
Re: NCAA w400Miss Miller will do something TORRENT outdoor.... This girl can challenge the world now.... That time is SMOKING for someone who is inexperienced where running Indoor is concerned, who is a freshman and who is also so young....I am so interested in seeing what she does outdoor now....
Re: NCAA w400Can anyone confirm the age 18 indoor 400m record..Thanks. I was searching for a list but cant find one. I know Sanya has the WJR at 50.82 but she ran it in March of 2004 at 19 years.
Re: NCAA w400
Will definitely be interesting... Beard and McCrory both ran 50 when they were seniors, Hastings and SRR ran it as a Junior and Sophomore respectively....Both went pro that year...
Re: NCAA w40050.88 makes Shaunae 32nd fastest woman of all time at the distance.... 31st was none other than Tonique Williams-Darling at 50.87 who evidently had ran that in 2004 the same year she won the Olympics. She is officially the fastest 18 year old of all time at this distance for sure.
Re: NCAA w400
Thanks t_monk. I recall Tonqiue's time in 04 and noted that it kick started a great year for her. God's willing, she can push to do some big things this year as well..
Re: NCAA w400
Which is basically the same age as Miller, because Miller will be 19 in a month.
Re: NCAA w400shaunae millers 50.88 indoor time would put her 13th on the all time world junior OUTDOOR list according to tilastopaja, miller, baird, spencer, george etc. the 400 is in good hands the next 10-15 years.
Re: NCAA w400Section 1 Finals
1 Shaunae Miller FR Georgia 50.88 10 2 Regina George SR Arkansas 51.05 8 3 Diamond Dixon JR Kansas 52.38 3 4 Briana Nelson JR Texas 53.24 1 Section 2 Finals 1 Ashley Spencer SO Illinois 51.27 6 2 Phyllis Francis JR Oregon 52.01 5 3 Georganne Moline SR Arizona 52.09 4 4 Sparkle McKnight JR Arkansas 52.52 2
Re: ¶NCAA w400: Georgia frosh MillerI'd known of Shaunae's accomplishments for the Bahamas in World Junior and World Youth, but I didn't realize that she was that tall... At 6' or 6'1" and being only 18, and with the potential to gain more strength in the future, her potential, although unknown, seems scary..
Re: NCAA w400
So Diamond outran Sparkle? Excellent
Re: ¶NCAA w400: Georgia frosh MillerI didn't see this result coming at all. I thought for sure Ashley Spencer had it in the bag. I really wish indoor tracks could accomodate all the finalists so the best can go head to head instead of time trialing.
