So far, the only thing running is the Heptathlon. Lazas had PRs in first three events, so looks like getting in to the 6100s. Cato almost made 2.14/7' 0.25 but he and Scantling still tied the meet record of one Aston Eaton while he was on the way to a WR (I think).

Potentially, we could have a great competition in day 2 when both Lazas and Cato scoring in the high 61xx or even low 62xx.

60h - Cato is the best hurdler in the field (7.88) whereas Lazas’s PB is only 8.35. The gap between the two equates to roughly 110 points which is slightly higher than Lazas’s lead. So unless Lazas can produce his fourth PB of the competition, Cato is expected to lead after five events.
In third place Scantling should increase his lead against the pack with a PB of 8.15

PV - Both Lazas and Cato are wonderful pole vaulters. Lazas PB is an amazing 5.41(!) but not during the heptathlon. Cato is not far behind with 5.25. If Lazas will pass one height more than Cato he will probably win the competition as he is the better 1000 runner. Scantling with relatively modest PB of 4.90 is likely to lose contact with the two leaders.

1500 - Lazas PB is four seconds better than Cato, while every second worth 10.5 points. If Lazas is in the lead after six events then he will win. Otherwise it will be a great battle in the last event.

1500 [1000]- Lazas PB is four seconds better than Cato, while every second worth 10.5 points. If Lazas is in the lead after six events then he will win. Otherwise it will be a great battle in the last event.

There is a video of Arkansas guys running Time Trial 1000s in about 3 heats early season. If I recall correctly Lazas had a 1:26 or even 1:25. Even at the end, it might be that he is ready to bust his old PR. Lazas definitely has the inside track here.

He and Cato are almost identical at the 60/HJ but completely reversed for the LJ/SP. When guys like Lazas and Scantling are improving so steadily it is impressive, particularly because they are doing it across the board, not just in the highly correlated events.

I thought >6000 Dec (~4500 Hep) freshman year and by the time he graduated, having a shot at top 8 at NCAA. Not to jinx him, but he may be on track (and field) for 8K before he graduates. AS I said at the time, he's an athletic savant. His body was made to do the multis.

edit - he just cleared an 8" PR in the vault with 5.10, 16-8.75. He's looking good for 3rd place overall after the 1000.

Well, Lazas, Cato and Zach Ziemek all made 530//17-4.5 So Lazas leads still by 19 going in to the 1000.

And now Lazas over 5.40 and Ziemek with a close miss then a make. Lazas will have (at least) a 50-point lead. Ziemek will make up ground on several ahead of him.

You were right about Scantling getting over 6000, it's just that he only needed 7 events, not 10. He's improvng so fast it's hard to project what he will do. For one thing, he has much more speed than first appeared. I think that his PR in the 400m is over 51 but he should be under 50 this year. Good javelin too.

Not trying to jinx your guy but I think that there is a good chance he will score 8,000 points THIS summer.
This is what he achieved this winter compared with his SBs in 2012 (I include both indoor and outdoor marks for the LJ, HJ, SP and PV)

60 - from 7.13 to 7.01 an improvement of 42 points
LJ - from 6.99 to 7.14 (36 points) an event that he is likely to improve a lot in the near future
SP from 13.59 to 14.26 (36 points) and suggests that the DT will also improve
HJ - from 2.09 to 2.11 (19 points) failure
60h - from 8.45 to 8.10 (85 points!)
PV - from 4.70 to 5.10 (122 points!!)
1000 - from 3:00.62 to 2:47.07 (138 points!!)
Heptathlon from 5481 to 6017 (536 points)

His PB in the decathlon is 7410. A similar improvement in the decathlon will see him very close to 8000:
For example:
11.1 - 7.04 - 14.12 - 2.14 - 50.00 - 14.65 - 40.00 - 5.10 - 58.0 - 4:45
seems a bit conservative at this stage, but will see him score 8001.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see him score above 8100

Just to clarify what you meant . . . 7481. I do see 8000 as on the horizon. I just can't tell how close that horizon is. HE WILL improve a LOT in the DT and probably the 1500. He needs more speed in the 100 to get where he wants to go, but I really think he's one of those kids that WILL improve a lot with practice.
