Precious Holmes' time was 53.86 in that 400....not 53.91.

Also: Michael Cherry ran a disappointing (IMO) time of 47.36.
After his 300 HSR, I expected him to take down the HSR in the indoor 400!
He even ran faster last year.....46.88.

Those were only the trials the finals will be tomorrow and I'm sure it will be much faster

Yeah, it's disappointing that Cherry only won his heat by 1.97 seconds when he could have won it by two seconds.

To answer my critics.....

first, Cherry might be just a "k-i-d".....but when he's on the track, he's an athlete......kid, adult, zombie vampire, whatever!!

When someone runs 33.05 for 300, you expect he's capable of more than 47.36!!

And BTW......according to the schedule I'm looking at......there is NOT any 400 scheduled for tomorrow!!
So my assumption was that the 400 Cherry (and many others ran, in several sections) was the FINAL!!

If it was indeed just a heat, a prelim.....then I ask for your forgiveness as to my "criticism"!!
A 47.36 in a HEAT is indeed quite good!!
But WAS it a prelim??

Like I said, the schedule I see does NOT have a 400 scheduled tomorrow (just the 4X400 relays).

Great girls 200m times... all finalists under 24.

Cal Poly's junior A. Washington I believe was the fastest in 23.57 or so in the heats.

For some perspective, A. Felix non-altitude HS record is 23.14 (B. Knight 22.97 HS record was at altitude).

Should be a great final.

I was WRONG!!

Cherry's race WAS just the prelims!!
The schedule I saw earlier had just the MORNING events for tomorrow!!
I just now saw the COMPLETE Sunday schedule!!
There IS a 400 FINAL!!

I apologize to one and all!!

(However, I still believe an athlete, once he or she is on the track....loses their designation as a "k-i-d"!! Same goes for Mary Cain et al. If she/he performs sub-par, I'll call them on it....kid or whatever!!)

I disagree, that type of expectation leads to situations like Alan Webb and Ryan Hall, who are both top-five Americans all-time in their respective events being labeled as failures or disappointments.

Okay, so let's look at this a bit closer.
Think of all the kids....a few younger than Mary Cain!!.....who have been on Olympic Games gymnastics and swimming teams over the years!!
I can't think of all the names, as I'm not much of a fan of swimming or gymnastics, but Mary Lou Retton from 1984 comes to mind.
And I know there's been a few swimmers, age 15 or 16, in the OG for the USA.

So we send these kids......at a very sensitive vulnerable age....into a PRESSURE COOKER like the OG......and then we get upset when someone says their performance was sub-par??

What are we supposed to do??
Pat them on the back....say, Kid, I know you have acne, failed your last math test, are REALLY shy around girls.....but HEY, you're just a KID......so don't you worry one little bit that you FAILED in the OLYMPIC GAMES!!!!
After all, being a KID......heck, you could MURDER someone, and we'd forgive you!!

Okay, an exaggeration!!
But if their coaches and parents (and they themselves!!) push theirself to become an Olympian.....instead of sticking to "youth" meets......then they need to know.....and more importantly, their COACHES and PARENTS need to know....that criticism, even if offered with a gentle touch.....is part and parcel of the "Devil's Agreement" they made by going for the Gold!!

That said.....Michael Cherry DID run a good time for a prelim......and in fact followed that with a 200 prelim in an eased up 21.55!!.....and so all's well that ends well!!

There's really not a whole lot more to say on this other than it appears a number of posters disagree with your thoughts. It says more about you than the kids.

Forgot to mention earlier....but Felecia Majors ran a SMOKING anchor on her 4X400 R team.
Sorry, don't know her split....it wasn't announced......but she was in LAST place when she took the baton....and she took her team to victory by MANY meters....maybe 30-40??.....!!

Clearly a future star!!
(Or is that CURRENT star?? :) )

They're doing the Opening Ceremonies now, so there's a small break in the action.
When they return, it's all finals!!
In order, with girls first, then boys for each event:

4X200R
2 mile run (Cheserek is running!)
60H (Girls have Wallace and Hall and K Williams, the 4068 Pent girl!!)
60
400 (Not sure if Baird will run this! And Michael Cherry to go in the boys race!!)
1 mile (Sotherland will be here in the girl's race against Wesley Frazier!)
800
200 (Cherry here too!!)
4X400R

New Balance's youtube coverage is really great. They upload all the videos right on there. It's more fun to watch this than the NCAA's, except for that Drouin High Jump.

Wesley Frazier, new HSR' holder in the 5K, won the 2 mile in 10:12.23, with a 2nd mile in about 5:02.
Julie McConville was 2nd in 10:17+.

Also, it was announced....didn't see it!....that J Green improved in the TJ to 51-6 and 1/2!!

Cheserek won the 2 mile in 8:59.0.....with a VERY familiar sounding 62.5 last 400!!

(Now, who was it ran a 62.5 last lap at last year's Penn Relays 1 mile?? :P )

BTW, Cheserek was taking it a bit easy. Why?? He's coming back for the 1 mile in little more than an hour!!

Yep, you're right!

But I think I have a decent excuse!
You see, I was so busy WATCHING the meet.....this TREMENDOUS meet!!.....that I wanted to take as LITTLE time as possible away from the livestream......

so that means I typed away as fast as possible my little "bulletins".....WITHOUT first checking to see if anyone else had reported anything!!

So sorry, I didn't see your report on Ms Southerland's race before heading back to watch the next race!!

Now......any more remarks about my pretty much SOLO effort to keep everyone informed of this INCREDIBLE meet??

As of a few days ago Ms. Southerland was trying to make up her mind between accepting a scholarship to Villanova or a scholarship to Georgetown.. I wonder if she'll end up considering any other schools now also, or if those two finalists are set in stone... Regardless, she keeps up the tradition of the 100 mile NY-Philadelphia corridor (that also includes NJ and the easternmost part of PA) of producing some exceptional 800m runners.. (Joetta Clark, Hazel Clark, Mary Cain, Ajee Wilson, the Francis girls, Charlene Lipsey, Latavia Thomas, Chanelle Price, etc, etc...)

...And avenged last year's loss (they were 3rd) to Wakefield today: 1:37.29-1:37.34. The Wakefield anchor was charging hard, but ran out of room and out of gas. Medgar Evers was taking no chances and no prisoners; 22.7 for Kadecia's 2nd leg!

They needed her to run faster than any girl had ever run in a relay. When she ran that 23.1 leg in the heats, and sandbagged her open 200 heat (24.12), I knew she was ready to go 22.x today! This race made my weekend.

Clue me in on this: Is this the 2nd time a HS girl has ever broken 23.0 indoors (the open 200 HSR 22.97 being the first) and the first time ever done in a relay? I've seen a multitude of 23.0s, 23.1s (including Kadecia's on Saturday) and 23.2s, but never a 22.9 or faster.

How long before we start mentioning Southerland in the same breath as Mary Cain?

She's now just 0.25 behind Cain's 800 time.....and Cain's was OUTdoors!!
How much faster can Southerland go when she steps outside onto a 400 meter track??

Also, the day before, she'd run a 4:44.9 relay mile on her team's DMR.
With 2:03 speed, she may have the wheels to go low to mid-4:30's outdoors!!
Maybe 4:32 or so.

Interesting race would be her, Cain, and Ajee Wilson in an 800.....or a 1000 together!!

Happens all the time. Years ago, one kid ran fast enough to make the open 200 final, but was not at the meet the next day to run. Some of them are on a fixed schedule and can't afford to break it. He probably went home last night or early this morning...

...Then again, sometimes a kid and/or the coach don't want to take any chances of overdoing it, and bring on an injury. Kadecia ran 23.22w at last year's outdoor nationals, but didn't run the final. She probably got her invitation to run at the World Juniors beforehand (where she ran 51.04), and didn't want to take any chances of pulling a muscle trying to chase 22.x before going to the WJs.

We'll probably find out by late-May or June. Obviously she's a new player in the campaign for 1:59.99.

How does 2:03.59 compare to 4:28.25 on the IAAF points system?

Sorry, don't know.
I'm one who doesn't really believe in points systems for rating different times
I cater more to the psychology of running.

Take someone whose best 800 (880) is 2:08.
She wants to run a 4:32 mile.
At 2:16 per half, that's just 8 secs slower than her PR.
So she might fear going out in 2:16....knowing she's never run more than 8 secs faster in an open 800.

But what if she improves to 2:04?
Then, going out in 2:16 would be a much more relaxed slowdown of 12 secs from her PR, not 8 secs!!
She might have the same ability....at 2:08 that she now has at 2:04.
But thinking a 12 sec slowdown....instead of just 8....provides a PSYCHOLOGICAL boost to her confidence....and a lessening of her fears.

Thus, when Cain improved her 800 from around 2:06 or 2:07 down to 2:03.34.....she could then feel more confident trying to run 2:16 halves.....which she stated was her goal in that first mile record (4:32.78).
If she'd still been at 2:06 or 2:07....she might not have felt that confidence.

Armchair Freud bullshit?? :)

She's now just 0.25 behind Cain's 800 time.....and Cain's was OUTdoors!!
How much faster can Southerland go when she steps outside onto a 400 meter track??

We'll probably find out by late-May or June. Obviously she's a new player in the campaign for 1:59.99.

How does 2:03.59 compare to 4:28.25 on the IAAF points system?

2:03.57 compares to 4:33.98

4:28.28 compares to 2:01.22

Cain's mile compares to an 8:52 3000m btw.

To me Southerland's race was the most impressive performance of the weekend, NCAA or New Balance. And I'm a multi-events fan and the NCAA heptathlon was great. There should be some great match-ups during outdoors among the young women runners.
