Unlisted pr'sDoes anyone know the 400 pr's for Carmelita Jeter, Flo Jo, Merlene Ottey, and Evelyn Ashford?
Re: Unlisted pr'sSee this thread for three of them (discussions of 100-200-400 combo):
http://www.trackandfieldnews.com/discus ... =1&t=24234 Ashford 51.08 FloJo 50.94 Ottey 51.12 Of course, subsequent discussions descend into "coulda, shoulda" Top 15 all time (in 2007) was 1 Marita Koch 10.83 21.71 47.60 2 Florence Griffith-Joyner 10.49 21.34 50.89 3 Marion Jones 10.65 21.62 49.59 4 Marie-Jose Perec 10.96 21.99 48.25 5 Gwen Torrence 10.82 21.72 49.64 6 Valerie Brisco-Hooks 10.99 21.81 48.83 7 Jarmila Kratochvilova 11.09 21.97 47.99 8 Irina Privalova 10.77 21.87 49.89 9 Merlene Ottey 10.74 21.64 51.12 10 Bärbel Eckert 10.95 21.85 49.56 11 Grace Jackson 11.08 21.72 49.57 12 Evelyn Ashford 10.76 21.83 51.08 13 Chandra Cheesebourough 11.13 21.99 49.05 14 Pauline Davis-Thompson 10.97 22.27 49.28 15 Pam Marshall 11.01 21.93 49.99 Felix has no doubt stormed into there by now... 10.89 21.69 49.59 And Richards-Ross 10.97, 22.09, 48.70
Re: Unlisted pr'sJeter ran 53.08 in 2009 (and 53.85 in 2012):
http://www.all-athletics.com/node/160012 http://www.tilastopaja.org/db/atw.php?ID=2911&Odd=1 Given she went to college almost before Al Gore invented the internet there might possibly be a slightly faster mark somewhere, but she never ran faster than 55.39 at college (see the record book from her alma mater: http://www.gotoros.com/documents/2012/1 ... df?id=1061 - 55.39 is the #10 fastest mark on their all-time performance list and Jeter isn't there)
Re: Unlisted pr'sI seem to remember Jeter running a sub-50 relay split from quite a few years ago. Look up on IAAF and then look on here: http://www.alltime-athletics.com/w4x400ok.htm
Re: Unlisted pr'sAnd of course FloJo was in shape to run 49 and probably 48, since her relay leg was very fast (even if not the fastest and not fast enough to win). And that was run where she had 3 x 100 (or 4?) and 3 or 4 x 200, plus the two relays.
Re: Unlisted pr'sThe last two posts are exactly what I meant when I said these conversations soon turn to "shoulda, coulda".
PRs are set in individual races, not relays.
Re: Unlisted pr's
This is not 'should coulda'. While relay splits cannot be PBs, they can give a good indication of what the athlete is capable of. I am not saying Jeter could run sub-50 individual, I am saying she has run a sub-50 split.
Re: Unlisted pr'sIf you were trying to estimate what she could run, one would be silly to base it solely on her history of 400m individual races. Of course for FloJo, one should consider her 9.6x/21/3x marks as well.
Re: Unlisted pr'sBut if the question is "what has athlete x run for 400m?", the answer should be the known PR in an individual race over the distance.
I'm comfortable with folks then saying "and said athlete ran an approximate time of YY in a relay leg over same distance"... as that is still an answer to the above question in that it is a known result. To answer with a "coulda", is to fundamentally modify the question and thus not answer it!!
Re: Unlisted pr's
These are what is listed there: RELAY LEGS FloJo 48.08 Seoul 1988 Jeter 49.9e Austin 2008
Re: Unlisted pr's
Wow that thread basically answered almost every single question. Thanks so much
Re: Unlisted pr'sWho knew Jeter even ever ran a 4 by 400? I didn't. Learn something new everyday.
