This is welcome news and coupled with the recent test to catch micro-dosing of testosterone do we have the drug labs go back and re-test from London? Anyone aware of how many times the original sample can be re-tested? I know there were all the re-tests from 2004 Games this year but when new tests are developed they should not wait years to re-test.

This could be a step in the right direction... For the new test to help deter EPO usage though, it will require efficient and foolproof unannounced out-of-competition random testing, which is still difficult (or impossible) to accomplish in some cases and in certain countries. It's possible that the performance enhancing effects of EPO can last approximately 2 weeks after the last dose.. The new test seems to be extremely reliable in detecting EPO supplementation for up to 12 hours after use, and the article states that "Approximately thirty percent of plasma samples still exceeded the 99.9% passport threshold a full 72 hours after the substance is used in that way".

Considering that EPO performance enhancing effects on the blood might last for about 2 weeks, if certain athletes only have to worry about in-competition testing, it could still be possible that their performances could benefit from the increase in oxygen carrying ability of the blood due to cheating with EPO or similar substances, without them having to worry about a positive in-competition test.. It'll be interesting to find out if this new more sensitive test will have an increased ability to detect EPO usage in older, preserved samples...
