Ohhhhh...it would be cool if this turned into a Lindgren/Clarke circa 1964! Yeah, I know, not likely to happen, but, hey, we can dream can't we?

Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]
Will Salazar add Cain to the start list?
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]Think Cain has 1:26 wheels? Me neither.
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]
Puh-leez. The girl isn't even 17 yet. No good is likely to come of creating expectations that she will meaningfully challenge Dibaba.
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]
Couldn't the same thing have been said of Lindgren supporters back then? No one is expecting MC to beat Dib, but I think there WILL be a good show.
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]cain ran 2:04.11 in eugene missing the semis of th OT 800
ajee wilson has better leg speed whn cain did the 4:39 mile at penn ajee ran 4:50, basically overdistance work for the world juniors later in the year both kids have elite level talent
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]FANTASTIC!!!!
Mary is going after the High School Record in the 1 mile this Saturday in the Armory!! (front page article) I just called the Armory, and left a message on their Facebook page asking them to PLEASE time the runners at the 1500 meter mark, thus giving Mary the chance to get BOTH records, just as Alan Webb got both in 2001. (He actually has FOUR records, as he was also timed enroute in his outdoor race!!) I KNEW Mary's desire to race for time, for RECORDS, wasn't going to be derailed by going with Salazar. Thank you, Alberto, for letting Mary be Mary!! In the next two weeks, Mary could get FOUR High School Records, since the Boston people ARE going to time the runners at the 3000 meter mark enroute to the 2 mile!! That's been substantiated!
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]Possibly SIX if we can get them to time at 1000m and 3200m marks!?!?!?
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]
You forgot to put THIS ( First of all, it has NOT been substantiated YET that the Armory will be timing them at the 1500 mark enroute!! I hope they do, but I don't know if they will.....yet. Second, even I, maybe Mary's biggest supporter for her to chase records, do NOT believe she would stand a chance to get SIX records.....or five!! (I DO believe she can get the 1000 meter HSR, but NOT in this 1 mile race!! She'd have to run a 1000 meter race to get that record.) They WILL be timing at the 3K enroute to the 2 mile at Boston, so ASSUMING she runs close to what she ran in Seattle, or even faster, she WILL get BOTH records!! IF...IF the Armory times the runners at the 1500 mark enroute, Mary has an almost 100% chance to get BOTH records. And she won't even have to come close to her outdoor mark. She could run, say, 4:16 at the 1500 relatively comfortably, and finish in 17 seconds for a 4:33 mile (NOT 1600!!). If she runs under 4:13 at the 1500, she could go sub-4:30 in the mile!! However, the 1000 mark ENROUTE to, say a 4:12 1500, would be about 2:48, much slower than Sarah Bowman's 2:43.40 HSR. BTW, Bowman herself will be in this race!!! As for the 1600 or 3200, those should be ABOLISHED!!! I don't give a rat's ass if they time the runners there!!!
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]
Yikes!! Good point, I had no idea it was that quick
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]
??!! 1000m en route to 1500??! The 1000 is a COMPLETELY different race - there's not even any sense taking a split there and trying to compare it to other 1000s.
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]
This is probably the most idiotic of the 'obviously true' (but not really true) statements that is made on this board. It is a real hassle to set off and time, including splits, the mile and two mile in a high school meet where they can barely get enough referees to get through a meet. The mile/1500 and the two-mile/3000 are fine for the big meets, but the dual meets are the heart of the high school system and season, and they do not need to run the mile and two mile. If you want to make an argument for the 1500/3000, that is a lot simpler, although not as simple as the 1600 and 3200.
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]
No there is not. . . so true...........................
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]In all the hyperbole (mine included!!) about the future of Mary Cain...
the next 10 years with Coach Salazar... whether she can make the WC team this year...or should even try to.... what she could do in Rio in 2016.... what fantastic times she might run..... one thing might be overlooked. That is..... in just the next twelve days..... through February 2nd..... the track world..... and especially the American high school track world..... might see the middle distance section of the High School Record book, the indoor female division..... COMPLETELY REWRITTEN!!!! FOUR girl's high school records are in mortal danger in the next 12 days!! 4:18.9 1500 by Lynn Jennings, run Feb 10, 1978 4:38.5 one mile by Debbie Heald, run Mar 17, 1972 9:17.4 3000 and 9:55.92 two mile, both run by Melody Fairchild Mar 10, 1991 And ONE girl may be the one to break all four records!! Whatever Mary Cain does outdoors this season, or in the many seasons to follow, one thing is for certain!! By February 2nd, just 12 days from now, we will KNOW..... whether Mary Cain has made Track History.... or not. FOUR records (in a thus far recordless season!!) in just two races, now held by THREE different women..... could ALL be shattered by ONE young girl, Mary Cain! And you know what?? She CAN do it!!
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]world youth 1500 seems cains target this yeaar
world junior 1500 next yearin eugene is next traget.. as of last year sub 56 400 speed was her edge, but this year salazar has focused on he xc base, so she has far more strength to use that speed suspect beijing 2015 could be her first senior comp if she wanted it armory is a banked track, and cain should find it home for her, as shes been running there since she was little
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]So young, so much expectation . . .
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]we saw her run the dmr as a frosh at penn and we all knew she was a phenom
i think salazar will bring her along properly
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]Millrose Mile (Feb 16) should be very interesting. I think the odds favor Mary Cain to win...although I did hear Sheila Reid say she ran a 4:05 1500M which is faster than MC's PR.
"High school standout Mary Cain of Bronxville, NY, will take on a field of top collegians and professionals. Cain, who is coached by three-time New York City Marathon champion Alberto Salazar, will try to break four records in the same race: the USA junior and high school marks for both 1500 meters and the mile. This month, Cain ran 9:02.10 for 3000 meters, the fastest time ever run by an American high school girl. The women's field includes Abbey D'Agostino (Dartmouth), who placed fifth in the 2012 Olympic Trials at 5000 meters; Jordan Hasay (University of Oregon), the 2011 NCAA indoor mile and 3000-meter champion and Emma Coburn (University of Colorado), the reigning Olympic Trials 3000-meter steeplechase champion. Among the professional women are Americans Ashley Higginson, Delilah DiCrescenzo, Kate Grace, Sarah Bowman, Emily Infeld, and Renée Tomlin, and Canadians Sheila Reid, Nicole Sifuentes, and Hilary Stellingwerff."
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]emily infeld would be the girl id pick for a surprise here
lets see what cain does in the armory before be project 4 weeks out
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]Both Nicole Sifuentes, and Hilary Stellingwerff had their best year in 2012, and for Hilary to do that at her stage was pretty impressive. However, I have no idea how these women are treating this race and the indoor season, which makes a huge difference. A bit of Canadian blood in this one. There are a lot of 4:05-capable women in here, but I doubt that they will be in 4:05 shape next month. I would put my dime on those that are pushing for WIC and I have no idea who that would be.
There are more good runners in this crowd than Cain has ever run with. One disadvantage that high school runners have is that they are so much better than everyone or all but one competitor that racing in a scrum is wholly unfamiliar. Even Decker seemed to have this problem at times and she faced more elbows than Cain has ever seen. Her stature will make it hard to see the track if she is stuck in the middle and unlike her first race, this is not likely to be primarily a time-orientation race (which will help her given her speed, since many here are longer distance than she is even though they have mile titles).
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]WOW!!!
This just gets better and better!! Record City, here we (Mary Cain!!!) come!!!!! Hallelujah!!! Mary's gonna race some biggies in the Millrose mile!! That means, if she does NOT shatter the 1500 and mile records THIS Saturday in the Armory, she'll get a SECOND chance to do so just two weeks after she (almost certainly) shatters the HSR's for 3K and 2 miles at Boston!! Hell, she might even break the records for the 1500 and mile she SETS this Saturday....AGAIN at Millrose!!! This is turning out to be a FANTASTIC indoor schedule for Mary!! (Only thing I'd change (or ADD!!!) would be attempts at the HSR's for 5000 and 1000 and 800 meters!!! But heh, who says life is nothing but a bowl of cherries??
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]Not sure why Ms. Cain hasn't made record attempts at 10,000m or 5,000m yet.
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]Or the marathon, 100 mile, the 6 day race! The trans-continental run...
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]
I may have to retire the Tafny in the "Hyperbolic Hoopla" category.
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]I don't have a dog in this fight but while Ms Cain's recent efforts would be notable downhill with a tailwind, I precict she will get schooled this weekend.
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]going 4:38 would e the primARY goal for cain
meaning she's run the mile faster indoor than any other high schooler why not celebrate the talent instead of old men finding failure anywhere suspect most people season target is moscow.. cain is world youth and i think salazar has his plan worked out
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]Let's hope the young lady puts up some good performances over a long career. Some of the expectation seem a bit much at this point with the unclear path of any 16 year old.
Not sure Lindgren is someone to be brought up in that vain.
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]
After Gerry ran his 9:00 at the Examiner meet in Dec 1963, no one expected he'd improve by 14 seconds in his next race, challenging SC great Roelants in the process, nor cut his time by another 6 seconds in his next race, challenging Aussie icon Clarke in the process, nor go on to run 13:44, beat the Russians in that 10K, nor make the OG, and finish 9th on a sprained ankle!! We will all know what Mary is capable of at age 16 yrs and 9 mos after her next three scheduled meets. She may NOT follow Lindgren's path.....but with that 9:02, and having already shattered the HSR in the 1500 last year (at age 16 yrs and 2 mos!!!)....I'd say her chances are pretty damn good!!! And let's not forget: Mary herself SAID her intent this weekend is to break the HSR in the 1 mile (and hopefully, if officially timed, the 1500 also!!). SHE is setting her own standards high!! We (I am) just supporting her in her quest!!
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]i've heard her interviewed any number of times, and she is quite articulate
she's very familiar with the armory, she kknows how the get the edge off the bank this new generation of young kids are not afraid to let it all hang out
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]
Looking forward to Mary's competitions too... It'll be interesting to see how fast she'll run at New Balance at the Armory, and to see how close she gets to the 4:25 they're shooting for at Millrose.. Just for reference, the indoor mile AJR is 4:32.30, while the indoor mile WJR is 4:24.10. http://www.runnersworld.com/races/centr ... ile-fields "Cain will tune up for the Millrose mile by racing the distance at the New Balance Games at the Armory this coming Saturday; she is said to be targeting the American indoor high school record of 4:38.5 at that meet. For Millrose, Salazar has told race organizers she will try to run 4:25." Last edited by Blues on Thu Jan 24, 2013 8:24 am, edited 1 time in total.
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]Suggested T&FN headline IF Mary breaks some records......
Cain IS Able. (As in Cain and Abel!!)
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]
I'm as giddy as the next guy about her talent, but there is something off-putting about the continuing internet analyses and soaring expectations of her 'career', when she's still this very young.
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]i saw her do the 4:39 mile at penn last year and 4:11 was her outdoor 1500 peak race
now salazar says 4:25 and he must know what's possible so world youth outdoor 1500 means low 4 range ah what world are we living in, when an american kid has the pediree of an african is saazr really crazy
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]
I'm starting a collection to buy you a new keyboard! It's gotta drive you crazy that the 'Shift' key is broken, most of the punctuation marks don't work, and letters like 'g' and 'l 'only work intermittently!
Re: Mary Cain 9:02.10 3k (Oversized track) [overall HSR]
Let's hope not.
