Guess this thread's title needs a slight revision! With just 3 weeks left to go this indoor season, here's a wrap-up of the records broken so far. As noted in my initial post on this thread, only WR's, AR's, CR's, and HSR's are included here. As we all know, there have been NUMEROUS other records broken this year: meet records, other national records besides the USA, individual year age records (age 19, age 28, etc), World and National Junior records (age 19 and under), High School CLASS records (Soph, Senior, etc), and on and on and on!!! But here are the records broken in the 4 categories I listed:
Men
WR---NONE AR----600....Sowinski-1:15.61 2 mile..Lagat--8:09.49 CR----1500...O'Hare--3:37.?? (It was listed somewhere, and it IS a CR for 1500!!) 1 mile--O'Hare--3:52.98 4X200R--Penn--1:24.70 HSR---2 mile--Cheserek--8:39.15 (Did he ALSO break Lindgren's 8:06.4 3000 record enroute??)
Women
WR--NONE AR---600--Montano--1:23.59 CR---NONE HSR--1500--Cain--4:16.11 1500--Cain--4:11.72 1 mile--Cain--4:32.78 1 mile--Cain--4:28.25 3000--Cain--9:04.51 (Again, her 9:02.10 was NOT an official record!!) 2 mile--Cain--9:38.68
Obviously, Mary Cain was and is the HUGE story this indoor season in the records department!! With SIX HSR's already broken, that in itself may be a record!! Has anyone, male or female, EVER broken SIX records in one year??
There's still some big meets left. The NCAA's, the USATF, and the High School season-enders!! Then there's the usual spate of European meets and collegiate conferences and pre-NCAA meets, plus lots of high school action left.
And the ubiquitous one still has one more race to go!! She said she'll "gun it" in whatever race she runs at USATF!!
Exciting year!! With Millrose's EIGHT records (in my 4 categories) being the HUGE highlight.
I'll do a final sum total after the indoor season ends next week, but as of today, here's the totals in my 4 categories (WR, AR, CR, HSR), with men's and women's totals being added together:
WR.........one AR..........seven CR..........five HSR........nine (with 2 events having the record broken twice each)
Total.......twenty two
Here's hoping the NCAA and NB meets add to the above totals!!

With the final day of the NB HS meet to go.....and that COULD produce one or two or even three or more HSR's!!......the new totals are:
WR---one AR---seven CR---six (Brooks SP added) HSR--eleven!!! (Frazier and K Williams added)
25 total (so far) in my 4 categories! Forget the lone WR (for a sec!!), and you've got 24 new records in 3 categories!! (And Mary Cain got 25% of those!!)
The 2013 indoor T&F season is over!! (Except for any "outdoor" events held indoors due to inclement weather, etc , later this year!!) And it ended with a total of 25 records being broken in my 4 categories (WR, AR, CR, HSR). The breakdown was as follows:
Two questions: 1. Has anyone broken more records in one indoor season (or even outdoor!!) than Mary Cain? 2. Has there been a bigger record-breaking season for high schoolers than the 11 total they broke??
This year may have been an anomaly....and without Cain, the numbers weren't as spectacular.....but I think it's safe to say that indoor track and field had a pretty GREAT season!! And I'm saying that beyond the numbers!! The Millrose meet was one of their best. The NCAA's were exciting, and the NB meet was one of the best!! Even the Euros seemed better than average. Yes? No??
Onward to the fresh air and sunshine.....or tornados and hurricanes!!

I suspect Henry Rono's 1978 season may surpass Cain's 6 records. Not sure how many times he set Collegiate Records prior to running his 4 World Records, but his efforts in 3000m, 2-mile, Steeple, 5,000m and 10,000m was unparalleled.

At some point last year a poster on Flotrack posited L. Lalang's season as the greatest distance year ever. Glad I'm not the only person who recalls Rono '78.
Forgot to include Arkansas's 4X400 R record!! So that makes it SEVEN CR's....and 26 overall!!
And apparently Florida got the AmCR with their 3:03.71, since both the old CR and the new one had teams with non-Americans.
By the way, for Cain to do to the 1500 record what Henry did to the SC, she would need to run ~3:45 or better (i.e., almost sub-4 pace for the mile).
Well, let's see.......with Mary's current rate of progress.......!!
Re: the American CR.......my tally does NOT include those.....just the overall CR etc!! There were, I know, NUMEROUS other kinds of records broken this indoor season....but my list included only THE......WR, AR, CR, HSR's!! Too many to count, otherwise!!
