Unfortunately age catches up with the best of us, even Olympic Champions, but I love seeing old greats and how they fair as they get older. It looks like most of these dont appear to do too much exercise judging by the waist lines and fuller faces, but some still look in great shape, such as Schenk, JJK and Flintoff King
Obviously with the internet it's easier to search for pics, but if anyone has pics of some past greats it would be great to post here, whichever year they competed,
Interesting thread! The multi-events people (JJK, Thompson, Voss, Schenk) do seem to be aging better than most - wonder why?
Really shocked at the state of some of them though though. It seems that after working so hard for so long to be in shape, some of them (naming no names) look to have gone from being almost superhuman to looking quite unhealty. Have to say as well the former DDR athletes seem to be aging more gracefully too - apart from the guys mentioned above, just look at Martina Hellman now! In the DDR they had a practice of gradually stepping down training so that the body could readapt to a less active lifestyle, thereby avoiding the health risks of a metabolism being unable to cope with burning so much less energy, with the resulting drastic weight gain and other side effects.
At least none of them look as bad as Bruce Jenner...

I've read quite often that continuing to work out is the BEST way to keep younger looking - more blood flow to the skin, which keeps it from losing its elasticity. Those sagging jowls and chins are what makes us look prematurely old!
Thanks Gabriella (and you have made a notable return to posting!).
The current T&FNews issue has a picture of Stefka's clearance of the WR -- with what looks to be close to 5cm of air above the bar. Is that really the WR jump and did she clear it all around like that picture shows? She might have hit 7 feet if the bar had been set right.
Also, if I recall correctly, I thought T&FN had a question "who will make the mark first: women at 7 feet or men at 8 feet?" Well, the men, or the man, made it first, but that is the only one (two clearances) of either of those marks and there are at least a few questions about our 8-footer (he did test positive for cocaine(?)).

Yes, the Stefka picture in T&FN is a terific HJ picture. Best technique of any woman IMO.
Soto and cocaine? That bust was in 1999 when he was far past his prime. He had no 2.40 jumps after about 1995.
Two other men in addition to Soto have been closer to 8ft than any woman to 7ft. Soto also had a 2.43 jump, just about 1cm from 8ft.
Soto also had a nandrolone positive in June of '01 and was banned again.
Despite all this, for some reason he continues to be very welcome in the halls of the IAAF, regularly appearing in the VIP box at meets, and was on the guest list in Barcelona last week.

I was surprised that the Lewis, Burrell and Mitchell race took place in 2007 due to Mitchell's bust...but he was there.
How fit the throwers look ! Schult looks great, Timmerman looks healthy and uber athletic, as does Litvinov and Koryjus, interesting how they havn't battled against the waistlines, and Lewis looks great too Kingdom loks strange, like he has been hitting the weights room very hard !! finally the photos could be different ages, ie a recent photo of x and a ten year old photo of Y
I would have never recognised Samolenko. I can't find a photo but I thought Lisovskaya was looking in very good nick when she was handing out medals at the 2010 European Champs.
