NBC's Tom Hammond: No more college plugs

It used to be automatic that the awful Tom Hammond would mention the NCAA college an athlete attended. Now, he almost never does it. I wonder what happened? Either way, he is a bad track announcer.

I like them myself. I usually like to know that. In most all sports.

But you're dead right in my opinion about Hammonds being bad either way. Whether he mentions this or not.

I do like the college mentions. I think they help the average fan connect to a sport that they might not be so familiar with.

I don't watch track on TV, so can't make an informed comment there, but I did say to somebody at my local sports bar over the winter, coincidentally enough, that I thought that the commentators (be it football or hoops), don't mention that the way they used to.

Actually, same seems to apply to a lot of print journalism these days.

I think much to the detriment of the casual (or even average) fan who may not follow the sport closely at both collegiate and pro levels, yet remains interested.

Have to wonder if it's not a corporate mandate of some sort.
