Close enough for you?

Gap between Ennis and Chernova 300 points. The medal is Ennis to lose. She can have relatively poor JT and still win

How is Skujyte not able to produce better on the track? Her HJ mark suggests she ought to be much faster.

Is she still the decathlon WR holder?

At the worlds last year I thought that Chernova had more in the tank. Ennis definitely needs a good javelin.

The 800 is going to be an insane race with respect to third if they're all so close.

I have Jess on for around 6940, Chernova much further back at around 6780, then the bronze is open. At the moment I have Nana Djimou ahead with around 6630, with Scwarzkopf, Savitskaya, Skujyte and Yosypenko just behind, in that order.

The LJ is going to be absolutely crucial for the bronze. Savitskaya is clearly the better long jumper with over 6.60. She is in great form so we have to assume she will do close to that, but if not, her JT is weaker than Nana Djimou's and Schwarzkopfs. The German needs as close to 6.30 as possible, while the French woman needs to go over 6.40. Skujyte is still my :?: but she cna do 6.30. Yosypenko should do a very similar LJ and JT as Skuyjyte, around 6.3 and 48, but she has a faster 800 than the Lithuanian.

Thanks for those who have pointed out how well Yosypenko is doing. I've added her to the projections after Day 1 above, at 6570 (6.25 49 2:14.5).

Dobrynska 6.45 991
Fountain 6.70 1072

Yosypenko 6.25 927

Not sure Chernova and Fountain will get anywhere near 6.70. I know you look at SB and PB, but Chernova hasn't shown that LJ form this season. Fountain has that 6.75, but I see her around 6.50.
The 6.07 the IAAF has as Schwarzkopf's SB is wrong as she's done 6.32 this year.

Looks like a 5 way shoot out for bronze. Silver and gold look pretty well sewn up barring a disaster.

I've got seven in the mix for bronze:

Natalya Dobrynska 6586
Jennifer Oeser 6566
Austra Skujyte 6564
Kristina Savitskaya 6553
Nana-Djimou 6550
Lili Schwarzkopf 6546
Lyudmyla Yosypenko 6544

And lots more exciting performances further down the table, with up-and-comers Schippers, Broersen, Ikauniece, and Maksimava on pace for pbs. Great first day of competition.

So has NBC already shown the heptathlon earlier in the day? Nothing so far. A shame Fountain is not breathing down Ennis' neck. I'm looking forward to seeing the last 100 of the 800 tomorrow.

Assuming Ennis will stay within 25cm from Chernova the gap will be more than 200 points. This will allow Ennis to throw 10 meters less than Chrnova and still have a lead before the 800. I cannot see Chernova able to win it on the last event. Assuming Chrnove can throw ~54 than Ennis needs only 44 which is well within her grasp. If (as I predict) Chernova and Ennis are going to have similar marks in the LJ then even a Daegu type of performance will not prevent Ennis from taking the gold. Right now I believe that there is more chance that Chernova will finish third (or worse) than she will win the gold.
Overall after the hype of the 100h this is a below par performance for both of them.

Yeah, she has four years to get reasonably good in the throws, and then we can expect great things from her in Rio 2016.

Great (for her) 6.30 in rd 1 for Lilli.

A JT of 53.00 and 800 of 2:12 takes her to 6652

I hope she does...she may need to. Nana Djimou is udner 6m in her first jump, but she can go over 6.40 and throw over 55m, so is the big danger for bronze. Of course, somneone like Yosypenko could exceed expectations and jump over 6.30 and throw over 50m (she has a PB over 50 butan SB of around 48) so every cm is crucial in both events! Ok, that's stating the obvious, but that battle for bronze is soooo close!

Saw this and found I had never added Schwarzkopf's best SP to my results list, and thus understated her projections. Should have been at 6597; after this LJ my projections give 6628 and for the moment put her in third place.

oo Jess's run up was totally wrong, she was chop chop chop to the board, she'll have to adjust that.

Chernova 6.44 with 20cm to spare on the board
