Please tell me NBC will run 100m final Live

Postby dbirds » Mon Jul 30, 2012 8:29 am

I know it's at 3:50 but it's on a Sunday! I'm not gonna say the tape delayed coverage is a failure as ratings have been strong but I prefer my events live esp. this big race on the weekend. A live 100m final on NBC on a Sunday afternoon would be huge!

I truly doubt that they will show the 100m final live....hell they didn't even show lochte or phelps live...so you KNOW they won't do it for T&F.

I will tell you this. It is mostly likely that it will not be shown in the afternoon.Don't forget the womens 100m final is Saturday afternoon.

NBC will record it and present it during primetime as if it is live. That is how they did Beijing and more than likely, same thing here.

You do have choice though. You should be able to watch it live at http://www.nbcolympics.com as long as you have a cable/satellite subscription and the feed doesn't break down. I have been hearing a few complaints about poor feeds on that website

There are numerous "pirate" websites that are showing it. If they are not listed here, just check out other track and field forums.

BTW,

Is there a website link with the Olympic track and field schedule with the equivalent US EDT for each race? I can easily do the conversion from military time(anytime after 12pm, you substract 12) and then, you have to subtract another 5 hours to get the US equivalent time for the east coast.

I would rather have a schedule that is already nicely converted.

For the last three days, sports guys on local and national radio as well as national TV have been complaing about the tape-delayed coverage. I'm guessing that a lot of people are going out to Best Buy to buy the necessary cables to hook their computers up to their TV's.

It will be on in the evening an they'll really drag it out. You know, "up next, after the volleyball". Or "after the ads we'll have track and field, volleyball and equestrian". And then you have to sit through everything but track and field.

I'm guessing we will not get it before 10 pm.

I have no idea if that is actually true, but if it is the retailers would love that. HDMI cables are some of the most ridiculously marked up merchandise in the store. Huge profit margin. Buy those things online.

Exactly what I was going to suggest. My laptop has a hdmi output port. And nbcolympics is streaming in resolutions that include options for 720 and 1080p. I tested the 1080p and got pretty good performance, especially if nobody else in the house is "on" at the same time. If your network provider is giving you high enough download speeds, you can stream it directly onto your 500 inch plasma monster, and it's then prime time whenever YOU SAY it is.

Of course in most cases it's a raw feed, so you'll have to miss out on NBC's lovely commentating. You can certainly hear the stadium announcer though, and there are the standard information graphics. It's just like sitting in the stadium. You wouldn't get to hear Costas or Dwight Stones if you were there in East London, so why bother with them when you're at home? Just gives you something to complain about.

Here's an idea- set up your 500 inch plasma monster in your front yard where all your neighbors can bring over their lawnchairs... and YOU provide the live narration. Your neighbors will appreciate it and be impressed with your dazzling knowledge of the sport. Especially at 3am west coast time.

Costas is a genius, he just sucks in his audience and they keep coming back for more. So they tell me.

Can you even IMAGINE if they did a tape delay of the SUPER BOWL (and you'd have to see it on the web if you wanted to see it live)? The mind boggles and then self-destructs.

There is a method to NBC’s madness.
Read a report recently that stated that NBC has done research which shows a large portion of the primetime Olympic coverage viewing audience consist of women and the research also suggested they do enjoy these human interest stories.

I certainly wouldn't count on that. NBC is traditionally very aggressive at having all loudspeakers turned off/down anywhere near their announce position.

Marlow, get with the program. Don't you understand? The OLYMPICS are not for sport fans. It is a 2 week reality show. Once you accept that fact you will be at peace and harmony with the world. Go with the flow....

They are showing it live. But not on the tube. It's live on NBCOlympics.com at 10:50 AM in the Pacific time zone but your mileage may vary. But take heart, if you have only the "Prime Time" coverage you can rest assured that they'll show the race ~47 times (in lieu of spending valuable air time covering other events). I'm jealous of those whose favorite events are the sprints and hurdles. All those races, men and women, are replayed ad nauseum ...

My plan is to eschew sleep and watch all track and field events live at their appointed times, sleep be damned! They ain't gonna show what I wanna see on "Prime Time", or as I call it, "Up Close and Stinko".

But imagine my dilemma. I'm heading out of town on Friday and will return on Sunday evening. I will miss the finals of the Pole Vault, though I'll catch every jump of the qualifying before I leave. I intend to live in a vacuum so as to avoid any possibility of hearing the results, and watch the finals from the recorded archive on Monday morning, which will show every jump, miss, make, or run-through. Like it or not, the current situation is WAY better than Olympic coverage of the past, with the notable exception of the Barcelona Games when I subscribed to the "Blue Channel" which allowed me to watch live and unencumbered by the Bob Costas of the world ...

Other than the heady days of '92, this is the best Olympic coverage ever!

The moral of the story...don't you dare try to criticise NBC coverage on twitter:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/20 ... ccount-nbc

Is this the story that upset the NBC?

http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/olym ... 86147.html

Maybe twitter and NBC are in bed because of this....

NBC's ratings are big. But the question is whether or not they could be bigger.

I know FIFA took less money for the Workd Cup from ESPN than was offered by NBC, because NBC wasn't going to do the matches live. It might not be the first time in history that FIFA turned down extra cash, but it doesn't happen often.

I would guess most of the nation asks no such thing. Most people are only able to watch during the evenings during the week. What would really be nice would be if they showed both the live event as it's happening and then had their normal prime time airings as they do now. Seems to me that they'd still get massive prime time ratings, but would also get a spike in viewership during the day and early morning hours.

Maybe 30 years ago, but now everyone records the shows they want and watches them in half the time at their convenience. Instead of having to stay up till midnight, they can watch the recordings and be done by 9pm.

Your welcome to not believe the story. But no matter how you slice it your use of the work everyone is a massive overstatement. This story suggest 8% of TV time is spent on DVR'ed items.

No doubt!
Most TVs just stay on all day when someone is home as background noise and momentary diversion. That certainly accounts for the low number. Virtually everyone I speak to about TV (admittedly not THAT much), watches their "Shows of Interest" (i. e., evening series) on DVR. It simply is not done that someone will not DVR their shows, even when they are at home!

They are in 40% of USA homes now and growing fast. I imagine the lag is in rural areas.
DVRs come with the cable service here and I know very few people (the dedicated anti-TV types) who don't have cable.
