There are no words.

Okay who cried along with us?

Brillant.
4 years ago we knew we were looking at the next WR holder.

And there is more there.

He is quite capable without bulking up of throwing 16m in the shot-he has the speed and explosiveness. If not 16 at least in the mid 15m.

A JJK record will be set by him one of these days.

For now....OMG!

I bet sebrle is asleep but knowing how classy these fellows are, I bet he will call him to congratulate him. No chest thumping with the multi eventers, just pure class. What a moment in track history !

Someone on twitter earlier was saying that Sebrle was watching/following the results.

Brilliant stuff by Eaton. I was never so happy to be wrong in my predictions. I watched dozens of races in full HD over the last few years. This one I had to watch over my computer screen that froze every 10 second or so. Yet I have no doubt that I will remember this as one of the greatest moment as a T&F fan.
As a side note with this performance Eaton passes Sebrle (into four palce) on score based on PBs. Giving his potential and young age I think that he will pass O’brien marks to become not only the world record holder but also the most gifted decathlete of all time

Has anyone ever broken a WR when it was so clear that he had about 200 points in the bag right away? Had there been decent weather I was expecting perhaps 45.90 in the 400m and 13.45 in the 110H. Maybe 6-10 or 7 in the HJ. And I still think he will be at Dan O'Brien level in the throws. I think this is the greatest decathlon of all time, correcting for era.
I am very happy to have low-balled a prediction. Usually I am too optimistic.
Good job by Hardee, who did exactly what he had to do.
I hope that we have not seen the last decathlon from Clay, a Hall of Famer if ever there was one.

O'brien was definitely capable of a LOT more when he set his WR, but I don't know if his shortfalls were because of only several sub-par events (such as with Eaton this weekend) or spread out across all 10.

I abandoned the message board to watch on TV without a computer in front of me . . . .

As to mojo/slowjo's question: There were tears in my eyes!

At 800m I didn't think he was going to do it - looked too labored. And I was annoyed that he wasn't glued to Detmer's behind. My wife assured me he couldn't hear my advice.

But Detmer did help when it really counted, in the last 300. And Ashton kicked hard - and absolutely thrilled all of us decathlon fans.

Thanks to all for your contributions. There are many unique contributors to this thread - I appreciate every one of you.

London, here we come on Aug 8 and 9!

Does anyone else think Dettmer ran a pace for Eaton? After the first lap the gap stayed pretty even between them. And the way Dettmer finished it appeared he could have gone faster?

What an event, the brillant highs of Eaton's 3 Dec WR's and the low of Clay going out of contention with disasterous 6 & 7th events, usually a couple of his best events. :o

Don't hang your head Clay, you've been an inspirational USA and Olympic champion. 2 Olympic DEC medals, shows you are one of the great ones. We will miss not watching you in London. :(

How close can Eaton get to the "all scoring tables" WR of 9206, C.K. Yang, 1963 ?

I didn't think he had it either at 800m. But I am terrible at numbers and pacing. We should never have doubted him. 8-)

Would LOVE to hear from those who were there-I well rememebr the sounds during the men's 800m last time-I bet this matched that and more.

And call me mojo.... :D

I think Beach and Detmer deliberately paced themselves to assure Eaton ran the requisite time to break the WR... classy move when they both backed off to let Eaton win..

Should we all e-mail ESPN too make it the play of the day or even the month?!?!? (I would go year, but I believe everyone here is hoping he will top it at London. )

Hey, Jack this 10X better then a Tiger chip in off the green.

Since this is a once in a decade achievement it should be The play of the decade!!!!! :D

On the front-page of FoxNews.com right now (okay, please look past the fact that it's Fox News and resist the urge to bash me for it):

"OREGON MAN BREAKS WORLD RECORD IN DECATHLON - Ashton Eaton, 24, sets world record in the decathlon at U.S. Olympic trials, beating 11-year-old mark by 13 points"

I can't remember the last time I saw anything track-related on the front-page of a major news site.

Just wondering.

1. Last Dec WR set on US soil?

2. Last Dec WR set on US soil by an American?

3. Number of WR's set in Eugene?

This is what's great about thespider. I am glad that uncle Tom didn't overhype it and that NBC stayed 30 mins beyond the window to show the reaction and the other two finals !

What an exciting run. I had prepped my wife for what needed to be done, knowing that the NBC guys wouldn't (and with that god awfual woman interviewing two great decathletes and not bringing in Eaton's upcoming oddyssey was crass) and we egged him on as if it was the OT 1500 final. At th bell I thought he could not possibly do it and then that last 400. So many, too many, times did we watch O'Brien back off a WR by not attacking a 1500, and to know this guy was putting it all out there is so gratifying. And we all know he has 200 more points in him.

He now has a smaller differential between PB's and score than Sebrle. 293 I think.
Rest up Ashton and we'll see you in London, where the weather will probably look familiar.

From a post by "Rojo" (the LetsRun founder) regarding Clay:

"PPS. I just got out of the Clay press conference and he said something along the lines of "I may go after the 'A' - I didn't know that might be possibility until right before I walked in here.'

So there you have it. We aren't the only one's thinking this.

His coach indicated he may go for it as well."

So maybe (hopefully) Clay might have a chance, however slight, to still get on the team. Fingers crossed!

look at the scores.
eaton did the impossible.
conditions probably accounted for what? a 200 plus points drop off the average PR?
with continuing improvement in the throws, you know eaton is at least 200 points better.
