Eaton, who already has the best "running" decathlon ever, has just posted the 2nd best "jumping" decathlon ever:

8.23, 2.05, 5.30 is good for 2974 points in the 3 jumping events, 2nd only to Tom Pappas in 2003:

Or if he's questioning the decision to go to Duke. I sure don't see his decathlon skills improving - but maybe I'm missing something.

Harlan is in 3rd and 933 pts behind Eaton. In the Olympic Trials. This is amazing.

Eaton needs exactly 4:20.0 to be the 2nd man over 9000pts.

Ashton Eaton now has 8189 points. In order to break the world record he has to race 4:16.23 min. His best time is 4:18.94, which is 2.71 seconds off the time needed. It can be done but is it likely. That is the question.

Ashton needed only 9 events for the A standard ! So he needs 416 plus. We will know in one hour !

His 8189 would have finished 7th in Goetzis.

As I posted (way) above, when Sebrle set the present WR, he ran 7s under his previous 1500PR - and never ran under that previous PR again in his life.

How big is the delay in the schedule right now? Sitting here in Sweden with a newspaper deadline in 1h 15 minutes? Will Sweden learn about Mr Eaton tomorrow?

WR on the line, in his home town, with his home town crowd, and I suspect some pacing help from his countrymen. He might well do something else he hasn't done before.

DecFan wrote:Hardee will be over 8500 as long as he runs sub 4:56. I posted above about the battle for third between Horn and Detmer - Horn needs to stay within 21/22 seconds. May not be easy.

Harlan in third place has a 26 points lead over Horn and 73 points over Detmer. However, he is a very slow 1500 runner (about 4:50-5:00) so he is unlikely to hold his opsition. Horn will be the only one (beside Eaton) that is likely to break his PB in this competition. He needs 4:26 to break the 8000 for the first time in his life. Another yound prospect for the US.

With a 317pt lead over 2nd place, if the dec 1500 were to be run as a "chase" (as some of us have discussed and advocated for on here) Eaton would be given about a 45-50 second head-start over Hardee (probably about 275-300 meters), and about 133 second (2:10, probably about 750 meters) head-start over 3rd place.

Last time I remember somthing similar is JJK winning the OT in 1988 by 1,000 points. Not a bad company to be with...

Eaton's run 2:32.67 for 1000 meters on an indoor track!!
To run 4:16.23, and to run it at an even pace, he'd be passing 1000 meters in 2:50.82.
I just cannot believe he can't handle a 2:50.82 1K pace, and then finish at the same pace!!

He's in Eugene, folks!
In Hayward Field!!
With 20,000+ screaming supportive friends and family and fans cheering his every step!!
Going for the WORLD Record!!!

He's gonna do it!!! :D

Eaton has 8189 through 9 events.

Clay had 8219 through 9 events (+30) in the 2008 Trials. He ran 4:50.97 and finished at 8832.

It would make the battle for 3rd more interesting . . . but the only folks interested in that tonight are about 5 of us on this board and the Beach and Detmer families . . .

Thanks for the reminder. At that time, it seemed the AR was not a big deal for Bryan. I think he thought he'd have many more opportunities to get it, and the OG were coming up. But you never know. He may regret not going for it that night 4 years ago.

Not to suggest that the 1500m is any "easier" for Ashton than for Bryan, but I'm guessing the pain levels experienced by the two, and the subsiquent fear of the event, are quite different among them. Have you ever seen the size of Clay's thighs!? I can only imagine the lactic buildup they generate (and shudder at the thought of it).

Yes, but I think many people have the mis-perseption that Clay's labored 1500's were a result of a lack of effort or will, as opposed to a lack of ability in the event. Do people assume that Eaton isn't putting forth effort or drive in the SP because his performances are way below the ability we all assume he should have?

So the situation before 1500. Hardy does not count.

Harlan 4:56.44 7256 580 7836
Horn 4:29.45 7229 748 7977 4-th
Detmer 4:08.00 7083 895 7978 3-d place
Eaton 4:16.00 8189 839 9028

The top three are fighting for third place.
Detmer with his high PB 4:04.11 in the fight for third place an explicit ally of Ashton, and it is wonderful!

Brilliant jumping by Eaton. His 8,23 - 2.05 - 5.30 equates to 2,974. This is the second best all-time performance behind Pappas 2985 (7.96 2.17 5.20). A better weather in the HJ and he would get this record (along with the record for the running events that he already holds)

That's terrible. Depending on your ISP, you may be able to watch it online here: http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/

I tried it, and it works for me (I have Comcast). Good luck! :)
