Yes, "среди молодежи"="U23". But "среди юношей" means "youth", "среди юниоров"="juniors"

Yes, Gulshat is from Beloretsk, small city in Bashkortostan (population - 70 000). It's hometown for many of russian top-level athletes: marathon runners Liliya Shobukhova, Galina Bogomolova and Yegor Nikolayev (1500 semifinalist of London 2012)

It's in Russian but you get the gist through google translate. Shubenkov, Tarabin, Dmitrik, Litvinov, Menkov, Kotulskaya, Sharmina (nee Martynova), Klishina and Abakumova are all included in the teams.

But Zaripova and Krivosapka have been completely MIA this year and Ukhov and Antyukh only have one disappointing result from Eugene.

She will have to learn a lot more about energy distribution, both in a race, a meet with rounds and a season. She is very talented. However:

In 2009, she ran 50.33, and 49.29 on the same day, heat and semi, then 49.71 the next day to win the final in the NC. In the WC, she ran 51.03, 49.67 and 49.71 for bronze.

In 2010, she raced sparingly, but did manage to set her SB in the Euro's, 50.10 for 3rd.

In 2011 she raced in the WC, with a similar pattern at a lower level, running 51.52, 50.55 (sf) and 50.66.

Last year, she ran 50.39, 50.05 and 49.16 in the NC (on different days this time), 50.75, 49.81 and 50.17 for 6th in London.

So, she has a pattern of running her best race of the season at the NC and her best race of a global champs meet in the semis.

Her distribution of energy in a race is just as questionable. I just re-watched the NBC "summary" programs on my DVR, and in the 400 final Krivoshapka was blowing the field away at 200, but her legs turned to shit in the straight.

Maybe she needs SAvinova's coach! >:-)

The Russians never select full-strength teams for the European Team Champs so it's no huge surprise.

Alena Kudashkina, 19, set a Russian junior record of 15:31.06 at their junior champs in Kasan'. She was 6th last year in the World Juniors, 16:05.xx. She broke the record of Gulshat Fazlitdinova, who just won the 10K at their nationals. I'm not sure whether her first name is pronounced "a-lyEn-a" or "a-lyOn-a" (they don't mark the letter "yo" except in text books, etc.). Anyone? Also, according to the article on RusAthletics, she ran each kilometer faster than the prior one.

Timofey Chaliy set a Russian junior record in the 400H at 49.78.

Valeriy Pronkin hammered 80.31, which is farther than any of their seniors has thrown this year.

AlyOna is right. In Russian "Alena" always sounds as "Alyona"

Krivoshapka is the SRR of the fareast. Fast times but prone to faltering. Hopefully her story will come full circle like Ross with triumph.

In some nice news, Yuliya Zaripova as well as being the Gold medal winner in the Steeplechase at the Universiade, was given a special award from the International Fair Play Committee. It appears she donated all her Olympic related earnings to an Orphanage and the rebirth fund charity.

She was noted as doing it without publicity or fan fair so they felt she deserved the prize which was given as a surprise after her win :)

She was already one of my favourite athletes and this makes me love her even more.

BTW, she has a really interesting backstory prior to her taking up the Steeplechase, she moved away from her parents (dad was her original coach), was married, divorced, a mother, financially broke, had two coaches die on her and left out of financing by the Russian Athletics federation by the age of 21.

Slesarenko plans to make her comeback at the Russian Championships next week. She missed 2012 through pregnancy and she was injured and I think she needed surgery. If she competes, it'll be her first competition since September 2011. I'd really love to see her challenge for a place on the team for Moscow although it's a difficult task...

Moscow's Luzhniki stadium is getting its finishing touches for the 2013 World Championships in Athletics. At a news conference Tuesday, organizers said tickets for the event are likely to sell out. Russia's biggest sports venue, will be able to accommodate 35,000 spectators according to Alexander Polinsky, a Moscow official who is responsible for organizing the championship.

Really? If i remember correctly it used to sit more than 100000 for the OG 1980 and it must have been in good condition for the Champions League final in 2008.

Time has changed for athletics in Russia. I think the entrance was free of charge last year for Moscow Challenge meet but there were maybe 10 people at Luzhniki. I remember commentator Bogoslovskaya after receiving message from someone during the meet, something like "where are the spectators?" she just answered "probably watching football(soccer)", good answer, imo...
Anyway, organizers probably knew what to expect and they decided that covering the seats is a good idea but I think they could have done a better job. It is extremely sad that country with such tradition in this sport can't fill the stadium for the WC.

From next year we can expect to see Kenyans and Ethiopians running for Russia. Chief coach Maslakov has said it's neccesary to follow the example of other European countries. Many top athletes, including Savinova, do not like the idea.
