foul | foul | 185' 4" (56.51m) | 193' 11" (59.11m) | foul | foul Shelbi Vaughn - Girls Discus Throw 212' Warm-Up - Golden West Invitational 2012 video Germany's Rüh aiming to better her role model Dietzsch at World Juniors - Barcelona 2012 "I had been throwing in training over 60 metres so it does not come as a surprise what I've been able to achieve in competition. I'm also stronger competing than when I'm practising, because there is also the added factor of having the adrenaline flowing," commented Rüh rather modestly. "A demonstration of Rüh's likely status as the thrower to beat in the Catalan city can be gauged from the fact that the next best thrower on the 2012 world junior rankings is China's Gu Siyu with 60.59m, almost three metres in arrears. What also caught the eye of observant athletics fans at the traditional Hallesche Werfertage throwing meeting last month was not only the outstanding distance she produced but also the implement she used to achieve it. It was a recognisable black discus that Dietzsch had used to win her third and final world title in Osaka five years ago."

Re: Women's Discus 2012 [Vaughan HSR 198' 11" 60.63m]Currently #7 on the 2012 US open list, and a USOT "A" qualifier(60.00m). Also, I believe official mark was 60.59m according to live results:

Re: Women's Discus 2012 [Vaughan HSR 198' 11" 60.59m]yes, which is 198-9, not 198-11.
Absolutely unbelievable that they'd be running off a national champs and publishing the results in metric-only!!!!
Re: Women's Discus 2012 [Vaughan HSR 198' 9" 60.59m]An amazing discus competition just ended at the german NCs in Wattenscheid. Nadine Müller won with 66.47m, followed by Julia Fischer, 63.21m. However the two juniors (both born 93), Anna Rüh and Shanice Craft, really duked it out until the very end. Shanice Craft had five attempts over her previous best, and was in third place with 62.92m until Rüh's last throw, where she threw a PB of 63.14m. With that last throw Rüh secured her spot for London, otherwise Craft would have been nominated.
Re: Women's Discus 2012 [Vaughan HSR 198' 9" 60.59m]Can someone explain this to me...
Event 31 Women Discus Throw ================================================================ Best 8 advance to final, ties will be broken American Jr.: A 58.06m 1995 Suzy Powell USA Jr. Meet: M 60.54m 1997 Seilala Sua WJC Qual: & 47.50m ... how is the USA Junior Meet Record father than the American Junior Record ?
Re: Women's Discus 2012 [Vaughan HSR 198' 9" 60.59m]
Interesting catch... T&FN also lists Suzy Powell as the USA Jr. record holder at 58.06, in either case, should Shelbi be the new USA Jr. record holder at 60.59? I thought a junior was defined as "any athlete of 18 or 19 years on 31st December in the year of the competition", and Sua was born Feb 25, 1978 (http://www.usatf.org/athletes/bios/TrackAndFieldArchive/2006/Sua_Seilala.asp), so I'm confused as well. Could Sua's mark at the '97 Jr. meet been set at a non-certified location, thus not allowed for record purposes?

Re: wDT '12 [Pishchalnikova 70.69m 231'11"]Darya Pishchalnikova goes 70.69m (231'11") at the Russian Olympic Trials–brother Bogdan threw a useful 65.64m (215'4") for the win.
Re: wDT '12 [Pishchalnikova 70.69m 231'11"]
Does useful mean 'notable' in this context?
Re: wDT '12 [Pishchalnikova 70.69m 231'11"]
No... means the performance he needed for the win.
Re: wDT '12 [Pishchalnikova 70.69m 231'11"]
Oh, okay- thanks. I see it a lot in European descriptions of athletics results and always wondered. The word is never used at all in American news summaries, at least not in that context. Now I know!
Re: wDT '12 [Pishchalnikova 70.69m 231'11"]
I think when they use it that mean it was a good performance.
Re: wDT '12 [Pishchalnikova 70.69m 231'11"]Useful performance would mean very good notable, but not exactly stellar thus 65m to his sister's 70m+

Re: wDT '12 [Pishchalnikova 70.69m 231'11"]For the first time in the history of WJC, all medalists were over 60 meters. Not even in the 1980s did that ever happen. And actually, in the previous 10 editions combined only two women did it

Re: Women's Discus 2012
Re: Women's Discus 2012I like that. Aiming high is good. I just hope she doesn't get unduly discouraged if she falls a little short of that goal for the season.
Women's Discus 2013 [Vaughan 185' college opener]I wonder who is working with Vaughan as far as goal setting and perspective?
