we ran charts a c ouple of times in the '70s and '80s which proved two things: the better guys with the 16 ended up waaayyy beyond their 12-pound marks. And the better guys with the 12 typically never matched their HS distance. Ever.
Thanks, that's the kind of info I was looking for - your statnut credentials are impeccable. I concur in your denial of a 10' norm.
I think the chart showed only one shot putter in the boy's high school top-10 list was also in the men's USA top-10 list... Mr Carter.

As a really quick look for a "norm on "initial" drop, let's look at the recent preps not named Crouser (who is obviously going to be a special-case chart buster). In '09 there were three seniors over 70: Baillio threw 75-4 3/4; as a frosh 61-7 1/2. Saenz threw 72-6 3/4; as frosh 60-5 3/4. Finley threw 71-8 3/4; as frosh 64-9 1/4.
So that's (round numbers) drops of 14 ft, 12 ft and 7ft. I'm not hanging my hat on any 10-foot "norm."
I suspect it has a ton to do with how big you are (and, perhaps even more importantly) how big your hands are.
My reference of 10' was in the same period. I still hold that Vena is yesterdays news.

Venna? I don't like writing anyone off at 18/19 years of age, it's about passion, choices and luck, ie not having a career ending injury.
I remember a few years ago there was a big tall kid running crazy times in the quarter mile at 15/16, they reckoned he could break Micheal Johnson's record then he started partying and they said he was gone, doesn't even run the quarter anymore, heard he took up the hundred though, they called him the lightening bolt....

Should we post these in the 2011 thread?
Yeah, what do you do with Crouser given that he is 19 years and barely 1 month at this point, but had he been 2 weeks overdue he would still be a junior.
This also came up with prodigal distance runners Alan Webb and Dathan Ritzenhein. Webb was only10 days younger than Ritz, but that was enough to make him junior eligible while Ritzenhein had to settle for running with the big boys.

And Withrow was born about Xmas day; a week later and he, not Rupp, would have had the 5000m (I think) record.

And it's like so what? Maybe the rules should be amended in some way because it does seem a bit unfair that someone born on 31 December misses out on a whole year's (minus a day) worth of opportunities to set records that someone born a day later has the opportunity to break.
And speaking of Jacko he is thowing this eveving in Christchurch - but in the discuss. I will report as soon as I know what he does.
If Jacko had been born 2 weeks later he would be elgible this year to still compete as a youth - but he wasn't and so he isn't.
Some of these are no longer U20 juniors. I'll weed it out as information comes in. 18.29m (60-00) Matthew Hoty (Tennessee) 18.21m (59-09) Stephen Mozia (Cornell) 18.07m (59-03) Ben Glauser (Harvard) 17.75m (58-03) Zach Coniglio (Sacramento St) 17.73m (58-02) Antonio James (Michigan State) 17.53m (57-06) Nick Vena (Virginia) 17.42m (57-02) Mark Jennings (Minnesota) 17.02m (55-10) Darrell Hill (Houston) 17.01m (55-09) Will Spence (Texas) 16.89m (55-05) Kole Weldon (Texas Tech) 16.87m (55-04) Kevin Farley (SE Missouri) 16.71m (54-10) Brad Vivace (Louisville) 16.65m (54-07) Andrew Akens (UTSA) 16.40m (53-09) Gabe Hull (Iowa)
Actually, Brzozowski is still a glider, although he's started learning the spin and is still talking of switching in the future. And here's a video of his 20.62 NJR: http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=3Nd ... =endscreen
There's also an interview with him on the Polish federation's YT channel, where he says he was a bit disappointed with his performance, since he hoped for 21+. He will also be competing in the national champs in the senior category in 3 weeks, and wants to get over 19 meters there.

I'm surprised this guy hasn't progressed more. Brzozowski threw very far with the 5kg, having thrown 23.23 in 2010 I reckoned that would have been the equivalent of 21m with the 6kg, and 2011 20.91 was less than i imagined him to be capable of, 2061 is less I believe than he could have thrown in 2010.
interesting remark, still a glider, well is Storl still a glider, or Whiting still a rotater? or Gill still a rotater? is there some suggestion than it is a more useful technique for throwing far, How far would Jacko throw if he was a glider? The meet in Poland with the big guys throwing heavy and light shots was interesting.

The reason I said he is still a glider is that he has been talking of switching to the spin, as I said in my post. In the interview I saw recently, he also said he believed the spin is the better technique for him in the long run, and he intends to work on it.
With young Tom Walsh also competing it will be interesting to see how close he can get to 20m. As for Jacko there has been no announcement as to what weight he will use.
"Training's been going really well. I've been mixing it up with some 8k and some 7k [runs] and just working on the weights side of things. I'm obviously not as strong [as the older competitors]. I don't push it too much, but I've decided to work on that," he said.
I see that they managed to get their athletics correspondent to sub this piece. Excellent, I was wondering what distances Jacko had been running in training.

And it's going really well so far :) I can't do the whole session without the shoe, because it wares the skin off the foot :/ but I'm already past the point I was at with the shoe on the left foot. Panda coming up with some more good ideas!!! ;) Staying in 8kg PB
