I can list them by event (or at least event group) but I don't promise to do anything else

Team effort, i like the sound of that :D

Ode to Rafer Johnson:

How sad - not a single vote for Rafer Johnson.
But, wait, I voted for Rafer Johnson.
How sad - a single vote for Rafer Johnson not counted.
But, wait, even Santa checks twice.
The crowds cry out,
Give Rafer his due, a tie for 190th place.
He earned no less.

And I'm still embarrassed that I was the only voter egotistical enough to vote for him or herself, albeit in 20th place.

Don't be! It's good to like yourself! :)

Plus, 6' 5" back in '65 was a great jump!

Here is my top 5.

1. 11
2. 7
3. 185
4. 28
5. 202

The highest placement I got was with my #9 who placed 5th. My #3 was Shura Chudina, #5 Dana Zátopková.

Reason for not voting for some regulars on this board was that I somehow assumed you should have followed the athlete's career, in retrospect an invalid consideration.

I didn't participate (came into this late) but I was surprised to see that Kevin Young isn't on the list. I haven't looked very closely yet, but how many other world record holders didn't make the list?

No need to stress - collecting and counting this sort of data is pretty easy and no need for special software or skills.

Get people to submit structured data in something like a delimited text file, which anybody on any computer can easily produce. Then paste the data into a spreadsheet and convert text to columns. You now have data that a simple pivot table can use to count unique names (=votes) and sum the inividual rankings(=points) and sort in order.

Ten minutes, go to whoa! You might have to do some initial checking on misspellings, name changes, reversal of Asian names etc but all quite simple.

This is the lowest effort and lowest requirement for technical skills for both sender and receiver - anybody with spreadsheet skills can show you how.

You can then spend more time planning the teasing releases rather than trying to get the count right. :D

Really pleased Mutola finished inside the top-15. :) I knew she's very respected but I didn't expect her to reach double figures in votes.

And a big thanks for organising the thread, Mump! It's been a great history lesson and I'll look forward to the next one.

OK, all athletes listed by event group (some of them are listed multiple times!) I apologise if I misclassified somebody, I'm not that familiar with all the athletes mentioned...

I also took the opportunity to meddle with the spellings - any remaining tyops are solely my fault and not to be blamed on mump, Daisy, Pego or any other compiler :)

b) missing athletes like Glenn Hardin and Rafer Johnson
c) perhaps mump forgot to remove some votes from the deleted lists
d) or even some kind of screw-up on my part

OK, so you haven't done much data collection/manipulation, so here's a simple guide to a delimited file and what you can do with it:

1) think of a delimiter as a separator between bits of text that can be used by spreadsheet software as an instruction to: "MAKE A NEW COLUMN HERE!" every time it comes across it.

2) So, a comma delimited text file (notice how it doesn't line up neatly) with the following content.....

Rank,FirstName,LastName,Country
1,mump boy,TFN News,ENG
2,El Toro,TFN News,AUS
3,Flumpy,BBC.co.uk,ENG

3) Can have the commas converted into columns by Excel(or other spreadsheet):

Code: Select all
ColumnA|ColumnB    |ColumnC   |ColumnD |
Rank   |FirstName  |LastName  |Country |
1      |mump boy   |TFN News  |ENG     |
2      |El Toro    |TFN News  |AUS     |
3      |Flumpy     |BBC.co.uk |ENG     |

4) Once you have the data in columns, you can do the ranking very easily (another tutorial  ).

This is a simple copy and paste and a few new things to learn. I have taught far more complex work to rank beginners, so this should be easily achievable for you with 20 minutes of effort.

far more elemental to making a DB work than any tab delimiting is to first be sure you have all the names spelled right (or equally wrong). (no offense mump)

Yes, equivalency is critical which is why avoiding data reentry when consolidating is important.

The participants are best placed to spell correctly, especially for lesser known athletes, so flowing their typed entries straight into the consolidation as described in my earlier post give the best chance for success.

Of course, there still needs be double checking for stuff like Kirzenstein vs Szewinska but you can minimise this with naming conventions.

mump, here's a link to an Excel tutorial with screen images, which shows you how easy it is

Thank you, El Toro. Mump is not the only one that could hone his Excel skills. I will certainly go over it.

I've already started making my list....and will PM you with it when done.....but not to worry.....I'm American, but 3 of the first names I thought of are "foreigners"!!!

And while I'm a HUGE fan of female T&F, my first few names have been all male!!
But that will change!!

Also, unlike some of you "elites" ( :P ), I've met some big names in the sport....but don't have any as friends, close or not, so that won't prejudice my thinking!!

(For "gh", that will probably be a HUGE problem!!!)

Anyway, you'll receive my PM shortly!!

What the hell is this??

I looked at this thread's title...and just assumed (never assume!!!!!) it was a BRAND NEW thread!!!
Then...AFTER I PM'ed you my list....I saw this started in 2011...and that there were 39 pages of comments!!!

So what's the deal??
Is this just a continuation of the 2011 poll?
A new one for 2012?/

And what's the deal with taking names OFF the list...just because they've gotten only one vote??
Do new entries have to first check to see if it's okay to vote for somebody before putting their name on their list??

To hell with that!!
I gave you my list a few minutes ago...and it includes MARY CAIN....who is probably on NO ONE ELSE'S list!!!!!

If ALL of my names aren't included on the final list......of ALL the names....then please remove my entry from your game!!!

And make the rules easier to follow!!
And please make sure EVERYONE KNOWS this is NOT a brand new thread....but something started about a year ago!!!!
