T&FN Favourite Athletes THE RESULTS No1 Haile Gebrselassie

Postby mump boy » Thu Nov 24, 2011 5:26 pm

So it's the time of year where there's nothing to talk about so i'm going to propose something we can all get involved in Track and Field News Official Favourite Athlete of All Time

Here's the rules

I want a list of everyone's top 20 greatest athletes. i will then convert everyone's favourites into points (20 for No1 to 1 for No20) and compile a difinitive list but here's the catch.

It is more important to be widely popular then 1 persons favourite so this is how the scoring will work. Athletes will be ranked by number of votes as well as number of points so someone who gets 2 votes at number 20 may only score 2 points but will be ahead of someone who is only 1 persons No1. So we''ll count down all those with 1 vote, then 2 etc etc etc.

to be honest you don't have to worry about the scoring i'll sort it out and make sure you all understand it

After some early drop outs and some late entries we have 420 athletes in the race

So can you all PM me with your top 20 FAVOURITE athletes of all time, we're looking for Favourites not best

I know this should probably be in the Historical Board but can we please leave it here for a while untill we have enough people entered

Please enter it will give me a reason to visit everyday :D

Not sure how to proceed. I assume we are talking T&F athletes.
An athlete can be a favorite because of performance, personality or if personally known.
One's favorites may not be known to anyone else.
Dithering done, here is my list:
(Sent by PM.)

Can we revise our list ?

You can proceed however you choose, it's your personal favourites for whatever reason and yes i'm talking track and field

We might do best ever at a later date to get us through those cold winter nights :D

(you can revise your list right up untill i close entries, which will be when i get enough to make it worth while so come on everyone)

I hadn't really thought about personall acquaintance as being a factor in deciding favourite athlete but of course it will come into play.

Everyone should choose exactly how they want to but the whole thing won't work too well if it's just a list of people's friends who aren't that well known to everyone else. So maybe we should concentrate on international athletes who have achievements we can all recognise and admire.

Otherwise we're going to have loads of people with just 1 vote

This is a workk in progress so i'm very open to ideas of how to make it work better

What kind of time window are you proposing? This sounds like a lot of fun to do, but it might force me to do some thinking.

Nice idea Mump!

Note: In putting this list together I realised that we're all likely to have our country and event biases. It may be an idea to limit number per country or event. Just a suggestion.

Any lists posted on the actual thread should be deleted.

A limit to how many athletes can come from1 country is a good idea. Maybe no more than 5?

Interesting but requires some thinking. I personally know zero ex or current T&F athletes and am free of nationality influence :) Gonna try

Please PM me with lists don't post on here as it influences other votes. Also while i don't want to put any restrictions on people choices of favourites, please don't just select people all from 1 country, or we'll just have a list full of Americans.

We're all fans of and knowledgeable about all aspects of the sport so lets try and be as inclusive as possible in our choices. Think of people who've really provided us with our favourite athletic moments and not just those that we know or have met. There will obviously be an element of that but lets try and keep it to a minimum

10. Dayron Robles
11. Carolina Kluft
12. Usain Bolt
13. Maria Mutola
14. Kevin Little
15. Colin Jackson
16. Lorraine Fenton
17. Deon Hemmings
18. Mo Farah
19. Mark Richardson
20. Susanna Kallur

Honourable mention
21. David Grindley
22. Wilson Kipketer
23. Irina Privolova
24. Tirunesh Dibaba
25. David Rudisha
26. Elena Slesarenko
27. Astrid Kumbernuss
28. Tatyana Lebedeva
29. Cathy Freeman

Note: In putting this list together I realised that we're all likely to have our country and event biases. It may be an idea to limit number per country or event. Just a suggestion.

How dare you rank Kevin Little two slots below Usain Bolt.

Sent my list to you mumpy.

Mine is very international and includes athletes from many eras. Probably more women on it than you guys have on yours. Gotta put my idols growing up on there. 8-)

Only one Canadian on it(although now I think aboot it I may need to do another revision  ) and he is still competing. I think y'all know who that is.

I will say my number one and that is JJK.

And that's a bad thing, why? What's the fun in just compiling lists when you can wax eloquently (or not) on why yours are the best. I'll go open:

yeah, mostly male Amis, oh well.

Marlow please delete your list and PM me with it. We have the discussion afterwards. The whole point is that we don't know who's people's choices are, so the results are a suprise.

After the results, i'll break them down by , sex, country, event etc etc etc

then i'll reveal everyone's personal lists and they can give us reasons and we can discuss them

This is supposed to get us through long winter of nothing to discuss :

I PM'ed you mine yesterday. They are ridiculously nostalgic, but as a teenager you glom on to favorites ( or favourites) much more so than as an adult !
As an aside, I pointedly included no flopping high jumpers or fiberglassing pole vaulters. Both events were RUINED in my humble opinion by these inventions.

Nostalgic? Nothing wrong with that.

They might be running 1.41 now, but I saw Marvelous Mal and he would be close to the top on my list.

The first ten of my list are fairly predictable but I'd be quite surprised if anyone else chooses some of my 11-20 picks. :D

Or T&FNs least favourite athletes.

Thanks for all the entries do far but keep them coming as this doesn't work unless we have high numbers of entries, so please encourage everyone to enter.

There are some very interesting choices so far, too few women, too many drug cheats and quite a few i've never heard of

This is going to be fun and give us lots to discuss so please PM me more suggestions.

I just did mine. Cornucopia of the past 60 years, some names, I am pretty sure, will appear only on my list :D . The top 5-6 were easy, after that, I could easily add 10-20 more in any order.

Hey mump, has the girl the right to change her mind in the next few days?

This will be tough for me: hard to distinguish between favorite athletes and favorite "people" (those I've had occasion to befriend, and are hard to judge just on pure fandom terms).

I tried to combine those two sentiments. That's why I have there a few Czechs and Slovaks that I met personally and liked.

OK, done. Right off the top of my head, with no thought what so ever. I bet I missed a ton of big ones in retrospect, but this is probably more in the spirit of the poll.

You can change your choices right up to when i close the poll. I will give warning before it's closed, it's going to be up for a while yet untill i get enough entries.

I haven't done my list yet but i'm going to try and not just fill it with people i know (although a couple might slip in)

I have to say that I share this sentiment. If you only wanted YOUR favorites, you could have spared us the time & trouble.
