Garcia: I tested positive for EPO
Alberto Garcia says he tested positive for EPO after the world cross country championships at Lausanne in March.
Garcia said in a statement that the Spanish athletics federation had informed him several days ago of the result.
The federation said it had not suspended Garcia even though it is mandated by IAAF rules. Spanish law supersedes the regulation, federation president Jose Maria Odriozola said.
Garcia was shocked by the positive result because less than 24 hours before the March 29 test, he had tested negative for the same substance.
He finished 20th in the long-course race, won by Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia.
Garcia denied drug use and said he did not know the result of the follow-up test.
Last week, the IAAF infuriated Spanish officials by disclosing that a Spaniard was among five athletes who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs at Lausanne.
The Spanish officials said the revelation violated rules governing confidentiality until a positive test is ruled definitive.
Garcia is the European 3,000-metre indoor and 5,000 outdoor champion.
