You don't actually have to be Jewish to compete in the Maccabiah games. It used to be that way, but then the rules changed as international participation waned. Additionally, as long as she can prove her mother was Jewish she can easily obtain Israeli citizenship.

Jillian is Jewish and not married. Israel is actively recruiting athletes with Jewish heritage to compete for them. There are others pending.

Can you point me to source that says that? I was not aware of that change and everything I can find on the web suggests that, apart from non-Jewish Israelis, the event is still open only to Jewish athletes.

can't point to a source other then first hand experience. Having competed several times in the Maccabiah games and been very friendly with several of the T&F athletes, I can assure you that starting in 2001 they opened the competition up to non-Jewish, Non-Israeli athletes by invitation. 2001 woman's 100 meter champion was from Turkey.

Last weekend, Steffi Nerius has been elected German sportswoman of the year. (First track and field athlete to win since Heike Drechsler in 2000.) Steffi has had a great career and saved the best for last. World champion on home soil at age 37. Perfect ending.

German shot putter Petra Lammert has announced her retirement after numerous elbow injuries, aged just 26. She finished 6th at the Euro's this year but was the European Indoor champion in 2009 and finished 3rd at the Euro's in 2006 and 5th at the Worlds in 2007. Her best is 20.04 from 2007.

Another German to retire is Jala Gangnus, at just 24. She is not so well known, but got silver in the European U20 champs in 2005 and was the German champion in 2006, reaching the SF in 2006. Her best time is 23.24 from when she was 20 but again, injuries have wrecked her career.

Why was Kim Collins name mentioned in this thread in 2009? Dude was beating the world through 70 meters at the '11 world champs, and got booted from the Olys this year

Strange retirement the one of Ruth Beitia. She is not that old (33 years) and is still jumping well (she was almost over 2.03 at the olympic games and cleared 2.00 metres twice this year). She is still among the best high jumpers of the world (still capable of clearing a personal record) so I wonder why she decided to retire.

a. to get on with 'the rest of her life'
b. training to stay that good is very arduous and time-consuming
c. to pursue other dreams (see a.), perhaps to be more fully involved as a parent (or to become one)
d. to actually make enough money to live on
e. tired of peeing in a cup for other people's purpose.
f. feels she has fully explored her athletic identity
g. has been accumulating niggling injuries that never fully go away
h. wants to start eating desserts again

that's the first several of 100s.

Beitia concludes her career with 19 national titles (11 indoors). She's headed to Rome for holidays. She'll then head out for some cycling and skiing. As far as her personal goals are concerned, consider that she's held the Spanish national record from 1998 onward, when she jumped 1.89m. She's been unrivalled in Spain. Appears as though she works as a Regional Deputy in the Cantabrian Parliament, and will continue along that course.

And to follow her, Anne Cibis nee Mollinger, announces her retirement, aged just 26. I find this a strange decision as she set a good PB this year of 11.17. To retire, at your peak while still young....me no compute :?

If this was indeed the end of Alekna's career, he deserved better than being stuck outside the main program.

Muriel Hurtis has not ended her career yet. She said she was thinking of retiring at the end of next season. So at least one more year ahead.

Danny McFarlane officially retired in October at 40 years old, after becoming the first 40something to ever run sub-50 in the 400m hurdles (49.69 to be exact). If I remember correctly, no other M40 has even run sub-52.

Why retire? Relax. Compete in masters athletics. Enjoy yourself. Keep your waistline forever.

"Retirement" only means retirement from the elite level. Many will indeed move on to the masters circuit or enter the local 5K, 10K, marathons or triathlons. Or other sports entirely like recreational basketball leagues or powerlifting.

She obviously feels it's time to retire but last three years were probably the best years in her career, great championships performer. I thought there was more to come... :( Hopefully (speaking of Latvians) Stanislavs Olijars will be back.
