FAVOR HAMILTON RETURNS TO PRE CLASSIC
Eugene, Oregon--After a one-year hiatus, former Eugene-resident Suzy Favor Hamilton returns to the Prefontaine Classic on May 24th to run the 1500 meters at Hayward Field. Favor Hamilton, who was ranked No. 4 in the world last year by Track & Field News magazine and is currently No. 3 on the IAAF World Rankings list, has been involved in some of the greatest races in Pre Classic history. In 1991, she won a thrilling photo-finish against PattiSue Plumer at 1500 meters, and nearly a decade later, lost by an eyelash in the 2000 race against Gabriela Szabo of Romania, who ran a meet record 4:00.73. Favor Hamilton went on to record a lifetime best of 3:57.40 later that year.
In this year's race, Favor Hamilton will face no fewer than four national recordholders, led by world indoor 800-meter recordholder Jolanda Ceplak (pronounced "Yolanda Chep-Luck") of Slovenia. Ceplak also holds her country's 1500-meter NR at 4:05.59, and has stated that she wants to try the 1500 meters seriously in advance of the Olympic Games next year.
National recordholders Dulce Maria Rodriguez of Mexico (4:06.12), Leah Pells of Canada (4:03.56), and Mardrea Hyman of Jamaica (4:05.25) are part of one of the most international fields in the meet's 29-year history. Lena Nilsson (Sweden), Suzy Walsham (Australia), Catherine Berry (Great Britain), and Courtney Babcock (Canada) will join Americans Sarah Schwald, Collette Liss, Carrie Tollefson, and Lisa Nye on May 24th.
Tickets are on-sale at the UO Ticket Office, or by calling 1-800-WEBFOOT. For more meet information, access our website, preclassic.com
