Michigan's Willis, Florida's Scott earn Mondo track & field honors

May 1, 2003-Middle-distance runner Nick Willis of Michigan and hammer thrower
Candice Scott of Florida have been named Mondo NCAA-I athletes of the week by
the Division I coaches group of the United States Track Coaches Assn.

They are recognized for performances in competition ending with the weekend
of April 25-26.

Willis, a freshman from New Zealand, was timed in 2:49.7 for his leadoff
1200-meter carry-the fastest ever at the Penn Relays-on Michigan's winning
distance medley relay team. He also ran 1:47.9 for an 800 leg on the
Wolverines' 4x800 meter team. Willis was selected as the meet's top male

Scott, a sophomore from Trinidad, broke her own collegiate mark in the hammer
throw with a winning mark of 223'10" in the Penn Relays. The effort was 10"
better than her previous record.

Other men nominated were Missouri shot putter Christian Cantwell, triple
jumper Randy Lewis of Wichita State, Stanford long jumper Milton Little,
Stanford distance runner Grant Robison and Ohio State shot putter/hammer
thrower Dan Taylor.

Other women nominated were Illinois hurdler Perdita Felicien, North Carolina
distance runner Shalane Flanagan, Iowa long jumper Aisha James, LSU sprinter
Muna Lee and Minnesota triple jumper Shani Marks.

The coaches' group will recognize a man and woman each week through the
remainder of the collegiate outdoor season, which ends with the NCAA
championships June 11-14 at Cal State-Sacramento.

An eight-member panel of track and field journalists selects the athletes of
the week from nominations submitted by coaches.
