she needs to think long and hard about olympic realities. Not sure what event will get her closest to a medal. She will have to retool and not let so much stuff get in her way next year if she even wants to be top 10 in athens in either event. Some self examination is in order.

I think, without a doubt, it's the marathon. Outside of Paula, she's pretty close to the rest of the world. There's a total of 5 active women on the all-time list ahead of her and chances are good that no more than 2-3 of them will be in a given WC/OG marathon with her, if she goes for it. Only Paula's time is truly out of her reach.

She has no chance to medal, ever, in a track event. If she is in good form for Athens, and what I said above holds, she'd be rated at least a bronze contender, maybe better. In the '05 WC she'd even have a better chance, because some big guns will skip that.

i think the marathon would give her a better chance to medal, because its an unpredictable race where she may be able to pick others off, but i think the ethiopians, kenyans, chinese and japanese, will be very tough. and i think there are runners who are better than radcliffe, even in the marathon and her 2.15 wont last more than 3 years, remember besides adere who is 30 the other ethiopians are very young.

And Drossin (who ran a very admirable race by the way) would have been yet another place back had Derartu Tulu been able to finish. She went to the hospital the morning of the race with stomach problems. Her manager--admittedly not an unbiased source--said that she had been having phenomenal workouts, kicking Kidane's butt, and may well have beaten Adere. Having seen Adere's kick, I find that hard to believe, but in any case, she certainly might have changed the medal picture.

Why in the world is Drossin going to run half of NYC Marathon to help other women? Is she nuts? What if she incurs an injury while "helping" these other women? There goes her Oly trials prep. It's very nice she is trying to be magnanimous but for pete's sake, she should be focusing on her Olympic year and preparation. Why would she risk this?

drossin is trying to get the other girls qualifiers, the standard for qualifying is so slow for her that 13 miles at that pace will be so easy for her she will probably consider it a recovery run, she probably runs 3-5 workouts per week harder than that, so the chances of her getting injured is minimal.

But why is she spending time and energy on this endeavor? Is Paula Radcliffe doing something like this? No. She is in solitary training mode. Focus and shutting the world out is how an athlete gets a medal. Not escorting a bunch of women on a training run in NYC. It's a major time and energy and focus drain.

doug b is correct - Drossin only has to split approx. 1:20 at half way - similar to KK splitting 1:12 or so - literally a jog for her. Undoubtably she has planned for the run in her fall training schedule, and I respect her for trying to build the U.S. running scene for women.

And not to beat a dead horse, but both Drossin and KK should have automatic Olympic births. They are SO far ahead of any other US runners (and serious Athens medal contenders) that they should be allowed to train thru the trials - but alas many would claim this isn't "fair".
