4x100 who would you rather have right now?

Postby Guest » Thu Aug 14, 2003 5:58 pm

The 4x100 is heating up since Mo and Monty are not running well right now. Who would you have for your 4x100 legs? We know Bernard will be one leg. But who will be the other 3? Capel is running very well right now. JJ Johnson is always good for a leg and Darvis has stepped up. Are we better off without Mo and Monty's attitudes or their desires to be the anchor leg no matter how well they are running?

The Berlin team - Drummond, BWms, Patton, Greene - because they have already shown they can do it. Next time they'll be 37.50.

I will take Drummond, Burrell, Mitchell, Lewis, against the fastest 5 guys from any country at any time in history and they will destroy them.

NO LIMIT also has no sight, the question related to 2003 stick to the topic at hand and refrain from ruining the thread.
I say the team is JD,BW,Doc,Mo with JJ to sub if Mo has a bad 100m

I'LL go ahead and put Drummond 1st, Williams 2nd, Capel 3rd, and JJ Johnson anchor. Greene is a great leg, but these guys don't need his ego. They need to come together to beat a strong British team. Hey No-limit I'll put Drummond, pre 2002 Mo Greene, MJ, and Carl Lewis against your team of Drummond,Burrell,Mitchell, and Carl anyday.

NO LIMIT wrote "5 fastest guys." I don't know if that was a typo or not, but it got me thinking. How many legs do you think would cover 400m the fastest? Would a 2x200m beat a 4x100m? Or would a 5x80m be faster? Do teams gain or lose time on a handoff?
What do y'all think?

What would a team like Darvis Patton, John Capel, Shawn Crawford, and JJ Johnson run. They really made their mark at 200 meters. Could they beat 4 excellent 100 runners, by holding their speed longer and using great handoffs. Good question dbj.

Judging by the results at Zurich, What about a team of Capel,Gatlin,Patton, and Crawford or JJ Johnson. What could they do?

I'd love to see.....

Gatlin....cat is a world champ 60 guy and a great 200 man he can run a curve.

Bernard...the next Burrell here.

Capel...can cook a breat 200,curve no problem!

JJ....not unlike a Tommie Smith/Steve Williams, a terror with a stick in his hands.

I really like that group of guys and the combinations are interesting. I do like Gatlin as a lead off..I would put Chapel at the 2nd leg ( mentioned in another post is the reasoning )..the other 2 legs can go either way. With good stick work that group is as good as any other . I think the idear of running a group of 200m specialist can really work...these guys have been running some good 100`s too so they are tough....and running from a fly puts them right into transition and able to hit top end speed early and maintaining it right through with that 200m strength......It would be interesting....good thoughts Rusty and you other guys .

Good post Mike, I often wondered why we overlooked 200 specialists for our 4x100. For example, Michael Johnson a 10.09 100 runner who undoubtedly could have gone much faster in the 100, if he would have trained specifically for it. I always thought Michael would have been a better leg than Dennis Mitchell. Yes Mitchell was great, but Johnson from a running start would have out run Dennis on that 3rd leg. That being said we have alot of good combo (100/200) types right now. The days of us running strictly 100 meter specialist could be short lived.

Rusty, remember Larry Black ...200m silver medalist in 1972. He lead off the 4 x 100m taking advantage of his curve running ability. He also had great range . I think he ran a 43 sec relay leg at Penn , not sure . But there have been many 200 guys with great speed and should be part of that relay pool.

Mike, What time do you think a team of John Capel, JJ Johnson, Michael Johnson, and Justin Gatlin could have run? All basically were 200 sprinters who also did well in other events

second: gatlin

finals (assuming we dont screw up)
lead off: drummond

third: capel
anchor: greene

The US will not run sub-38 without Greene. Watch for a WR with Greene as the anchor (Drummond-1, Montgomery-2, and Williams-3). It's iffy to include him, but I think I'd give the backstretch to Montgomery.

flash, I don't trust Montgomery passing the baton. I would rather he run anchor and Greene run 2nd, because Greene works with Drummond everyday at HSI.

If anyone should get the 2nd leg it should be one of the 200m men...Chapal or Patton...long back straight and you can shorten up the zone from Drummond to him and the same on the 3rd leg so that his leg is a bit longer ..perfect for a 200m runner( using his strength) who also has legit range at the 100m

there is so much we don't know, as to who has practiced passing to/from whom, etc., but experience counts too, and Gatlin has never had to pass/take the stick in the Big Leagues.

Am I missing something or did Gatlin take 4rd in Finland....And look who won, was that Patton,a 200m man. American sprinters are in a state of flux..fast and talented runners but no one real consistent guy. It`s about who comes into Paris healthy and peaking at the right time..as far as the relay goes, we`re having fun with all the " what if`s" but as the above post so well states it..we don`t know whats going on behind the scene..who has been working together as a unit, etc ,etc. One thing is for sure , the French proved a while ago that it`s not about having the fastest guns but how well you can move the stick around...and that means chemistry and pratice

According to the USATF website, Gatlin is not in the 4X100 team. The following have been listed:

John Capel, Jon Drummond, Maurice Greene, J.J. Johnson, Coby Miller (Auburn, AL), Tim Montgomery, Darvis Patton and Bernard Williams

I like the consistency of Patton and he handles the batton and curve well.

Whoever we put out there needs to be ready and be consistent with their passing. We need more relay meets to practice. The USATF needs to have the guys pick 3 other guys or they choose themselves and offer more money for the winners in those relay meets. Carl Lewis had a good idea at one time. He suggested that his Santa Monica Track Club of Mike Marsh, Leroy Burrell, Floyd Heard, and Carl take on a team of Jon Drummond,Maurice Greene, Michael Johnson, and Dennis Mitchell. The winner would represent the US at the 96' Olympics. He went on to say that the top 2 in the 100 would be added in the relay pool if they weren't already on the winning relay team. Whatever we do we need to practice more often.

Whoever is in you have to have Bernard on the team right now. He is our best and most consistent sprinter at this time.

Well we can't include Gatlin right now since he isn't in the relay pool. I think the finals will look like this:

Capel: He seems to be solid right now and seems to be in better shape than Drummond. Although Drummond is the vet, Capel's recent performances can't be ignored.

Williams: He has run very well on this leg and it was evident in the last relay. He is pretty much solid on this leg.

Patton: He has been the man of this leg so far. He's consistent and has been running well. He seems to be the man for this leg.

Greene: It seems as though JJ Johnson would be the man for this leg, seeing that he is a solid anchor and has run down both Greene and Monty on this leg, however, Greene is solid and is the defending champion. Greene's recent relay performance shows that he has what it takes to bring home the glory.

I like the Berlin squad (37.77) was very impressive, but I must tell you JJ Johnson closed significantly on Mo Greene. Who remembers him doing the same thing to Tim Montgomery at Penns? His top end speed is extraordinary. Not withstanding the credentials of Greene if the US squad had a real threat he would be my # 1 choice to anchor. Remember the French using three 200 guys with great handoffs a few years ago and breaking the world record. Don't sneeze at top end speed.

Remember the Soviets also with no runner under 10.10 yet fronted the Americans 1986 and 1987 (until the 350 mark). the third legs-200 meter runners with no 100 meter reported for the entire season yet they ran 38.19 and 38.02 respectively. The Americans get it right they may run under 37.50. But note the French and Soviet technique the original underhand method established by the USA in the early 70's.

If we pass very well, and get a great leadoff leg we definitely have a chance at 37.50. If we get pushed by the Brits we could break 37.40.

Do anyone know if Montegomery is leaving Paris today,or is he "hot" in the relay team for 4x100m after Drummond ev. suspension and Mo Greens little injury?

I have a big bet on Montgomery to take a medal in the Championship ,and if he will run the realay the chances for me are good.
