Did the US lose the relay gold?

Postby MJD » Tue Aug 12, 2003 12:08 pm

I thought I would get this on a new thread. gh thinks maybe yes based on his interpretation of the rules which, in all likeliehood, he understands better than PASO.

"Grimes also ran the first leg of the victorious men’s 400-meter relay on Saturday. PASO would not comment on whether the United States would lose that gold medal, as well."

According to this-yes.

"The United States lost two gold medals at the Pan American Games on Tuesday after sprinter Mickey Grimes failed a doping test."

"Ephedrine, commonly found in over-the-counter dietary supplements and cold medications, is ephedra's active ingredient and is on the list of prohibited substances."

So did he accidently take it, 'accidently' take it, or intentionally take it?

Here's a thorny one for statisticians: does he lose his PR 10.08, set the day before the positive test?

I would have to say yes. If the rules are to be applied consistently as they were applied to the relay, it's like he didn't compete.
