TULA, Russia (AP) - Russia's Gulnara Samitova set a world record in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase Sunday with a time of 9 minutes, 8.33 seconds.

I guess under 9 is around the corner. I remember when Roudny won the European Championship with the time roughly the same as Samitova's.

Still an event where we have no idea what a truly good mark is, although Turova's 1500 record suggests it might not be too bad. I was just sorry that Regina Jacobs never followed thorugh on her plan to try the event last year.

Well here's a SWAG: the top men run 25-30 seconds off their 3K best, possibly a little better. Let's say women run a 30-35 seconds difference. 8:30 is a super time, so under 9:00 would be phenomenal, I think. 9:08 is smoking for now.

Yeah, the 8:50s is probably going to be the upper limit for this event in a few years.

On a similar note, does anyone know what a 52.34s 400mH performance would convert to (theoritically), in the 400m flat?

I've always thought it was around 2.0 seconds as a minimum for the best men hurdlers (as opposed to runners), but it's probably closer to 2.5 for the elite. It must be the same for women, because she can't do a sub-50, can she?

Was Kevin Young a sub45 runner? It seems that his WR wasn't a lot slower than his flat PR. Somebody who has access to those statistics, could you look it up?

"she can't do a sub-50, can she?"

Do you mean, "she hasn't yet officially clocked sub-50?"?....because she ran 51.00 indoors this year, and based on that hurdles time, I think she will soon show us something under 49. Probably next year.

Using the Mercier scoring tables, a 52.34 400mH time is "worth" a 48.41 400m run. Of course, this doesn't mean that Pechonkina is capable of running 48.41, it's just a cross-event comparison.

I believe Young's best 400 was 45.11. It's pretty amazing the little time between his 400h time and 400 flat time.
