Pan Am Jrs

The game kick off today. The sprints seem to be a US vs. JAM battle, like that of the 1999 Games. Who are the favorites?

Good question, one very tough to answer. The safe bet is that the Jamaicans will dominate the Americans, for the simple reason that few (none?) of the Americans have any experience with still being in shape in the middle of July. Indeed, for most of them, still being in shape the third week of June was probably real stretch, their high school careers typically having them end their season in May or the beginning of June.

Huh? The last time the U.S. sent a full-strength team (1999), we dominated Pan Am Juniors sprints. In 2001, we didn't send a full-strength team due to 9-11. Can't speak for the distance runners, but most of the junior sprinters also do club track. Thus, they are VERY accustomed to running in the summertime. In fact, some run faster in the summer than they do during the school season. Not to mention that the Jamaican school season ends even earlier than the U.S. one.
