What's wrong with this picture?

Bubka seems to have an ice pick protruding from his right shin.

You referring to the angle at which the pole is being held? Other than to perform some sort of goofy trick, a vaulter would never have the end of the pole straight up in the air like that.

pretty sure that Bubka indeed started with his pole pretty much vertical.

go here

https://www.google.com/search?q=sergey+ ... 42&bih=923

about 2/3 of the way down you'll find a quartering view of that statue and right under it a T&FN cover in which he's close to that position.

(also wouldn't surprise me that the physics involved with the casting of the statue mandated the keeping as much of i as possible in one vertical plane)

It's hard to really tell from that photo, but it kind of looks like he's holding the bar underhand with his left hand.

The guy was a freaking beast ! Unfortunately it is impossible for a bronze statue of anything less than 500m in height to deliver the shock and awe of the real life Bubka going down the runway like a runaway freight train .

Neither he, nor any vaulter I've seen, holds the pole that way, with the top arm back by his shoulder. If you're going to make a statue that big, get it freakin right!

actually, I believe the issue is more with the orientation of the hands than anything else.

Kind of funny because beginners (when you first hand them the pole) will often get the top (right) hand wrong like that, but i've never seen anyone grasp with their bottom (left) hand in that fashion.
