NCAA DI Cross Country Championship

Anyone else here going to the meet? dukehjsteve? I'll be there with a few running friends from my HS days in Louisville, if anyone wants to get together for beer and pizza afterwards, or even Friday p.m. Anyone go to Pre-Nationals last weekend? A year ago I heard it's not a very spectator-friendly course.

I will not make it; maybe in a couple years it will be in Madison and everyone can come visit. :D

From what I have heard, most do not like the course which is still narrow in places despite removing some trees, and there are numerous tree roots in the ground that are hard to see when in a big pack. It also is a flat course.

I read somewhere (LR?) that they are constructing a new course, which would change things, although a bad experience now might make it a bit harder to garner a second.

I probably would have gone if Minnesota was going to make it. But the Gophers are having a not so hot season, so maybe next year.

This is what EP Sawyer Park looked like in 1981:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=26934&

We ran some HS meets there starting in the fall of 1978. I'm amazed how it's changed, with the trees maturing and areas where they let the underbrush grow. It was mostly wide-open grassy fields back then, except at the northern boundary of the park. The course we ran cannot be run now as trees and bushes block a lot of the western part.

Jesse, Ed, anyone else, do you have time after the meet for a meal? Right across Wesport Rd there's a Mexican place called the Tumbleweed, a Pizza Hut, and a few other places.

Looks as if this thread has segued from "Are ya gonna be there?" to a general thread about the RACES!!
So here's my final prediction of the women's race, both team and individual, and of the men's individual (Don't know enough about the teams!!).....

Oregon Ducks WIN!!!

1. Laura Hollander
2. Betsy Saina
3. Jordan Hasay
4. Alexi Pappas
5. Kathy Kroeger
6. Alison Woodward
7. Cayla Hatton

For the men's race, I predict.....

1. Lawi Lalang
2. Trevor Dunbar
3. Stephen Sambu

Who would have thought Hasay would go all four years without an individual XC title? Saina by the book on beating her.

It makes her no different than any other female Kinney/FL winner.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's been frustrated by the lack of Delta Timing's capacity to handle the demand for access to their results site.

Yeah, I noticed that. Were they really surprised that lotsa people would want real-time results?
I guess we never hear about the sites that beef up their servers before a demand-glut, but we sure notice when they don't.

I second this. I was mildly surprised FSU did not finish in top 2. Far more surprised at the alleged post-race "altercation" and how NCAA handled it.

Delta has more problems than this. Here's something from Delta's results of the DIII champs today:

95 70 Avi Bregman 228 JR Haverford 25:39.8 3:13 5:10 3k: 9:24; 5k: 16:03
95 69 Greg Whittle 145 SR Calvin 25:39.8 3:13 5:10 3k: 9:24; 5k: 16:00

First column is the individual place, second column is the team place.

Considering Calvin finished 2nd in the team scoring with 188 points and Haverford was third with 189 (Wisconsin-LaCrosse, 4th with 190!) it would be nice to know what the correct finish order was between these two guys.

The Jumbotron score board at the meet kept changing after the women's race. If these things don't work, they shouldn't use them for real-time scoring. No team scores en route, nothing posted until results are final.

Hasay's collegiate xc career in review, focusing on the 3 big meets of the season:

2009
PAC-10 3rd (team 2nd)
NCAA W 2nd (team 2nd)
NCAA Ch 18th (team 9th)
2010
PAC-10 1st (team t-3rd)
NCAA W 1st (team 2nd)
NCAA Ch 3rd (team 12th)
2011
PAC-12 3rd (team 4th)
NCAA W 1st (team 4th)
NCAA Ch 2nd (team 5th)
2012
PAC-12 2nd (team 1st)
NCAA W 1st (team 1st)
NCAA Ch 3rd (team 1st)

An excellent record in the 12 big meets over 4 years: only once below 3rd. And I'm sure those team championships this year feel pretty good.

After her early, early HS success, I'm sure many people never thought she'd continue to be this good. Is there an Oly 10K in her future? She doesn't quite have the kick to get on the team at 5K, but 10K or even Mar might be the ticket!

The timing problem seems to be related to missing Alexi Pappas in Oregon's scoring. This was apparently due to her affiliation still being listed as Dartmouth (or Princeton), her previous school. If so, that mistake might be hers or might be NCAAs. Since the initial results listed Oregon with a low score similar to its final tally, this must have occurred partly though the process some how.

The confusion was highlighted by there being a verbal 'altercation' between FSU and OU athletes and people jumped to the wrong conclusion (although I heard that someone said a FSU athlete was listed as DQed for a bit, not sure on that one).

I, for one, am much happier for them to be generating results as they go and at the finish that are not yet official. We have sat through some very long periods where they did not list any scores until everything was official. And, in this XC meet, with numerous athletes crossing in a short interval (a casual look yielded five withing 0.6 seconds), there are a lot of close cases. The rules require looking at all cases where times are within 0.10 seconds. Since most of these cases will have nothing to do with the results at the top, why should we wait to find out if Oregon won based on a close contest for 237th place (an actual case), which gets looked at after they investigate 30 or 50 other finishes hitting that criteria?

Can you imagine a football game or other event where they did not provide a running score. Would you not score a track meet because there is a protest in an event that does not affect any scoring or any scoring of the top 20 teams?

Pappas was apparently listed as non team scoring initially. Ray Treacy's comment that Providence was "We were national champions for 10 minutes" just seemed bizarre if he were near the finish line since anyone watching the race would have to conclude that Oregon won handily.

There were reports of some sort of altercation after the race involving FSU but was this ever confirmed? Karen Harvey once again off the rails a bit with some post race comments....although not quite as weird as last years.

I think, in this case, the O stands for Oregon.. one of the announcers kept referring to the Oregon State bright orange singlets until his broadcast partner finally corrected him. Oklahoma State and Oregon State do both have orange/black as their colors.

That was Bob Kennedy who referred to Oklahoma State a few times as Oregon State.

Apparently at one point they took the top placers and had them spliced in around 24th and with Pappas maybe missed altogether. Delta Timing did the meet and messed up the DIII race also, from what I understand. Again, it was the woman's race and was worse than the DI fiasco.

In the men's race, the top five scorers belonged to OSU (2) and Wisconsin (3), talk about low sticks.
