If Wells performs next year like she's been doing this year, she would be the favorite to win the gold medal coming into London. Carruthers has also been doing well.
We'll see if London 2012 is finally going to be the year that Lagat, Richards-Ross and Felix win gold medals. If Lagat doesn't win a gold medal in 2012, I don't think it takes away from all he's accomplished.

I see Sheena Tosta's name on the list. That's interesting. I know she didn't make it on the national team this year, but when it comes time for competing for a spot in the Olympics, she does very well in nationals and does very well in the Olympics (finished 4th in 2004 and silver medalist in 2008). One wonders though if her time has passed. I know it has for Tiffany Ross-Williams. If it has, I'd replace her on that list with Queen Harrison.
tm71 wrote:it is extremely unlikely that even 3/4 of that list would make the team and be contenders by next summer.
Agreed... but which ones?
You can already eliminate Shawn Crawford, Terrance Trammell and Sheena Tosta off the list. If the US Nationals are any indication, all three may be done with being a part of the US Team, although Tosta does step it up during Olympic years. However, with the emergence of Queen Harrison, that may not happen. Not sure if Lolo Jones can rebound, but doubtful, especially if Dawn Harper, Danielle Carruthers and Kellie Wells ride their momentum into next season.
Crawford and Trammell have had nice careers and it would not surprise me to see either of them retire if neither make the Olympic Squad next year.

Moura wrote:I think was successful, but I still believe that will be very hard to get 30 medal in London. I know that some stars did not participate in this WC, but is usual that some miss a major due to injury or bad performance in US nationals or even doping. This time was Wariner, Gay, Love, Clay for example. Next year can be others, for example Merritt (400) can be not elegible to participate in OG due to doping problem. One interesting fact from this WC, is female and male US teams had very similar performances which is unusual as in other majors US male team won much more medals than female team. Other interesting fact, the strength of US is usually sprints and hurdles. In male in 7 events (5 individual ans 2 relays) only get 5 medals in total and just two were gold. In female things were much better with 9 medals and 4 gold. Anyway this WC "discovered" new stars from US such as Simpson, Taylor, Centrowitz and Claye which seem to me that can in London also contribute for US medalling. It is too early to predict for London, as new stars will appear, some athletes who underperform in this WC will come back much stronger and some champs from this WC will surely fail in London. To get 30 medal in London, I think US has to have all their best athletes healthy which is not very probable to happen.
Is “Project 30″ still a possibility? Still the goals for some... US coaches like chances for 30-medal Olympic haul "There is a lot of opportunity to get those 30 medals," Valmon said. The 30-medal goal for London was set by former USA Track and Field chief executive Doug Logan and backed by new chief executive Max Siegel, who took over last month. Americans claimed 23 medals from athletics at Beijing with seven golds, nine silvers and seven bronzes."
2012 could be a very good year for U.S. track and field team July 3, 2012 "... at the U.S. Olympic trials was an array of world-class races and enough noteworthy leaps and bounds to suggest the team will come close to its goal of 30 medals at the London Games." • Allyson Felix (200m) • Tyson Gay (100m) • Justin Gatlin (100m) • Wallace Spearmon Jr (200m) • Sanya Richards-Ross (400m) • Aries Merritt (sprint hurdles) • Jason Richardson (sprint hurdles) • Ashton Eaton (multis) • Lashinda Demus (400m hurdles) • Jenny Simpson (mile) • Morgan Uceny (mile) • Chaunte Lowe (hight jump) • Brigetta Barrett (hight jump) • Alysia Johnson Montano (½ mile) • Galen Rupp (distance) • Christian Taylor (triple jump)

Is this the worst USA athletics team ever? 5 July 2012 "The 'roster' contains a lot of 'tourists', athletes with little hope of winning a medal. The Star-Spangled Banner no longer sparkles. Dwight Stones, said: 'I'm disturbed by our lack of depth. Our system is showing its vulnerability. The cause is not enough high-quality coaches and not enough money. Until we address that, we're going to see standards continuing to fall.' "
Track & Field News' predictions: 17 men’s medals... 100m Tyson Gay 200m Wallace Spearmon 400m LaShawn Merritt 5k Bernard Lagat 10k Galen Rupp 110m h Jason Richardson, Aries Merritt 400m h Kerron Clement 4x100m 4x400m HJ Jesse Williams TJ Christian Taylor, Will Claye SP Reese Hoffa, Ryan Whiting Dec Ashton Eaton, Trey Hardee
I like Wallace Spearmon but piking him 2nd in 200m is a stretch if Jamaicans are healthy. I pick a healthy US runner to get bronze in 100m and 400m. IMO this is a very weak men US team and I hope I am wrong.
Track and field: U.S. seeking 30 medals after bungle of Beijing July 8, 2012 "Still, 30 track and field medals might be a stretch. The United States has not brought home that many in 20 years. The Americans won 23 medals in Beijing, and only seven were gold."
Interesting how 15 out of 45 of the individuals listed in the original list didn't make it in individual events. A few that made the team will be long shots or require a huge performance to make the podium. Even some of the daegu medalist will have a hard time getting back on the podium (camarena-Williams, centrowicz, simpson will have a hard time repeating their feats this time). But again I don't see getting shut out in the men's 400 h and shot like in Korea. However, the total of 30 seems unrealistic.

Who are your drop/adds from T&F News' picks?
I have Men - 7 golds, 16 medals Women - 7 golds, 13 medals
that's 29 medals, but I also know I have a natural US bias, so we won't get all 29.
Marlow, I have the USA getting exactly 30 medals (McQuay and Rupp included), and I try very hard not to be a homer. You commented about doing so much research and then having similar picks to T&F News. I feel the exact same way. I worked my tail off this year, and then I find that T&F News has similar picks. But I do have some long shots in there that other people dont have (men's long jump, men's hammer, and women's 400m). I hope to see your picks in the Netherlands contest.
