All-Time Big 10 Men's
Winners: 1901-2001
by Don Kopriva
Established as the "Intercollegiate
Conference of Faculty Representatives" on Feb. 8, 1896, at the
Palmer House in Chicago, the conference that became popularly known
as the "Big 10" held its first outdoor track & field championships
at Chicago's Marshall Field on June 1, 1901.
Competing were the original
seven founding members-Chicago, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern,
Purdue and Wisconsin (and Iowa State, which had joined the Conference
on December 1, 1899). Beloit also competed in the 9-team meet. Michigan
scored 38 points to Wisconsin's 28 to win the first league title.
Indiana, which was admitted
to the Conference at the same time as Iowa State, did not compete in
the meet until 1904.
Other membership changes
continued through the years, with winners coming from schools as far-flung
as Stanford and Cal in the pre-NCAA days. Michigan withdrew from the
loop on January 14, 1908, in protest against "retroactive provisions"
of certain conference enactments. The Wolverines resumed membership
on November 20, 1917.
Ohio State was admitted on
April 6, 1912, and first appeared in a Big 10 track championship in
1914, finishing sixth of six teams that competed.
On March 8, 1946, one-time
powerhouse Chicago withdrew, citing its inability to "provide reasonable
equality of competition as of June 30, 1946."
Michigan State was admitted
on May 20, 1949, and began Big 10 outdoor track competition with the
1951 meet, finishing 3rd.
Original member Northwestern,
while still a member of the conference, dropped track and last competed
in the '88 meet.
Penn State became the Conference's
11th member when it was admitted to membership on June 4, 1990, and
competed in its first Big 10 outdoor championship in 1992.
